I've been looking for a 15" speaker to replace the JBL D-130 in my Fender Twin. I like the sound of old Jensens in Fender amps and when I saw the Jensen Neo 150 for $99 at Techtronics, I thought it would be worth a shot. I was hoping to get the classic Jensen sound, with the added bonus of light weight and capable of handling 150 watts.
I was pleasantly surprised when the 150 arrived and I could lift it out of the box with two fingers. Amazingly lightweight and my Twin immediately lost 12 lbs. Unfortunately my other expectations were not met. The bottom end was ok, though not as deep and tight as the JBL. The mids were fuller, but the highs were unbearably harsh and ice picky. There is a top end spike to this speaker that seems to be right in the range of metal fingerpicks, so that a sizzling pick noise washes over everything. In hopes that the speaker just needed breaking in, I left it in the Twin for two weeks, including two full days of running the radio through it at high volume. The sound was still horrible, and I just finished re-installing the D-130. What a relief! I love the sound of the D-130, but worry about blowing it out. The Jensen may work better in some other amp or cabinet, but IMO it is a poor match for a Fender Twin. FYI. |

I've heard similar about Webers being better with the Ceramic Mag. I took Bob at Eurotube's recommendation and went with the ceramics on my two Fenders. 30w for my Bls Jr and 50 for the HRDeluxe. They sound GREAT.
I had thought about a New mag for my Session 500, but might take yet another avenue.
We'll see..

I tried the Eminence Kappalite Neo 15" Speaker and it also was very shrill in my rack system! I thought the sound also lacked the low end punch, tight bass response of the Peavey Black Widow or the Commonwealth. There may be some applications where this speaker is the best fit but for me, I went back to the heavier speakers. Good sound is far more important to me than light weight.

I've heard that the Weber Neo speakers are very close, soundwise, to the JBL D series. |

The guitar player in my band plays through a Weber Neomag 15 and the sound is identical to the JBL D-130F. A bit pricy, though, and doesn't handle much more power that the JBL (75 watts). I have a pair of D-130F's. Guess I'll just recone if I blow one out. |

I think the Jensen Neo 300 watt version has less high end than the 150.
I've never tried one, but it might be a bit better in that regard . _________________ Straight Ahead 500 watt mini~power amp |
