Hi,
I´ll be at the Dallas convention next week and I´m thinking to buy an iPhone while being in the US. Where should I go to get one. It needs to be unlocked to use it with my SIM card I guess. After the Dallas show I´m going to travel the US a little and could make some good use of navigation software for the iPhone. Is something like this available or is it possibly a standard feature?
Thanks

You may have trouble doing that with an Iphone in the US. The U.S. is way behind Europe and the rest of the world when it comes to cel phones. You will need to buy a cracked (illegal) Iphone or get an account with AT&T to buy an iphone. I don't think Iphones accept sim cards. To port your info into the phone you will need a computer. I think you may even need a computer to get the iphone to work at all. You may be better off with an Itouch. It does everything an Iphone does except phone calls. _________________ Bob |

There is NO GPS navigation with the I-phone either. I believe that Google maps might work, but not sure. _________________ Mark T

There is no Sim Card, built in, you activate it on line with your computer, and there is a Navigation in the phone, plus Google earth, ect... I've had the I ` phone since July, pretty handy to have, like having your computer with you all the time... |

It would probably be less expensive to buy a GPS and a good cell phone than to buy an I-phone. You can get the mapping by the online services though, if you don't need turn-by-turn direction. |

A friend of mine here in Central IL bought an iPhone for her daughter and went to the Apple store where she bought her computer to buy the iphone. They told her that they couldn't sell her one and that she would have to go to an AT&T corporate store to buy it. When she was at the AT&T store the salesperson tried to sell her anything but an iphone. |

The closest Apple store to the Jamboree would be in Southlake Town Square, not NorthPark mall. About 15 minutes away.
Yes, the iPhone uses a SIM card. The phone is a standard quad-band GSM and theoretically will work any place those bands are available. However, as all US vendors do, the iPhone is locked to AT&T's network and will accept no other SIM. Unless it's been hacked. There are services available on the net that will do this for you but be aware that Apple often releases a software update which breaks the hack.
More important, you cannot buy the iPhone in the US without signing a two-year service contract with AT&T. This means you'd be responsible for paying the monthly fee during that time. As you are not a US resident Joerg, that would be a huge imposition. |

Hi,
thanks to everyone for all the information!
Looks like that it´s not easy to buy an iPhone.
This AT&T contract makes no sense to me as a non-resident. The only thing that might work is to buy an iPhone from the bay. The unlocking procedure doesn´t look to complicated, but it´s nothing I like to do while visiting the TSGA convention. I think I´ll postpone the iPhone purchasing.
