Talking bar movement/technique in a LONG SLIDE from low to high........

Ever notice how JERRY BYRD's slides are all liquid, if you will, like a palm tree swaying in the breeze?

Same with John Hughey's long, deliberate slides.....

Many steel players exhibit this 'control' during the slide.

OTHERS however, make those long slides, somewhat without feeling, like a metranome banging away without feeling. Jerry and John were experts at milking the feeling out of those slides. In fact, the closer they got to the final fret destination, the longer it took them to make that last fret or half fret of travel.

How do you do it? ZIP! RIP? or just how and why?

Jerry Byrd's feel reminds me of watching the waves roll in at a beach, a rubato cadence of sorts. I hear nature. Its magical.

Ray,
The long slide is a technique I've been trying to perfect. i admit it, I rush it. I always try to play with as much feel as I can, but I always rush the slide.

Ray, if I understand what you are saying here, the best example I know of is a Lloyd Green slide on one of the songs in his album "Reflections" where it sounded to me like he went a full 2 octaves in one slide. To me it was making music all the way up there, altho I'm not smart enough to know exactly what he was doing the whole way.

If you go to www.jimeatonmusic.com you can hear a clip of a song I wrote called "Airy Cari",for my wife to use as background music on her website, that has several examples of how I play some long slides.
The clip plays on the title page and it will play again when you click on enter and go to the main page if you want to hear it a second time.
Let me know how I did!
