I am very sorry to report that jazz bassist Dennis Irwin passed away yesterday March 10th from spinal cancer. Dennis was a brilliant bassist who played with many different great jazz artists. He was also my friend and played the bass on my jazz guitar CD. He was a great guy, and I will never forget him.

I missed this and Shef sent me an email.
What a horrible way to wake up in the morning.

Like Mike N. said one of the best bass players,
in a town FILLED with them.
NYC if there are 5 topnotch bass players in one million people,
there are 50 who live in NYC,
and another 50 passing through town on any given day.

Dennis stood out amongst hundreds every day he played.
He also was a very likable man and my friend.
I made a point of seeing him play with the
Village Vanguard Big Band when ever my schedule permited.
This is the same band formerly of Mel Lewis/Thad Jones,
Y'all likely would know them for playing the Theme for 'The Odd Couple' TV show.

Dennis could sight read and improvise with high clarity and no rythmic issues.
Just call him in hand him the chart, do the song.

Others in town may have had bigger names,
but not many had better playing chops!
he also recorded with many of the BEST advanced players in town.

He had a good career. And goes out known as a good guy too.
He even gets a Wikipedia listing! Dennis Irwin

RIP Dennis Irwin. I will miss you.

NY Times
Quote:
Mr. Irwin’s swing was deep and dependable,
and he played on more than 500 albums.

For an upright bass player this is as good as it gets.

The list of players at Lincoln Center
playing in his name is stellar too.
