Is there a optimal pickup height for Emmons' single coil pickups?

I usually adjust my Tele and Strat single coils low enough so that the magnets don't impede string vibration. I recently noticed my Emmons pickups were about 3/64"from both the 1st and 10th string pole pieces to the top of their respective strings, while my Sho-Bud pickups were 5/64".

Looking for a little more twang and sustain, I lowered the Emmons pickups to 5/64" and noticed a definite improvement in sustain both below and especially above the 15th fret. Tomorrow, I'll retake those measurements to the bottom of each string which should be more accurate via factoring out string diameter.

Anyone?

C'mon!..........No one has ever considered single-coil pickup height and it's effect on tone?

well, since you're begging....do a search on pickup height or string height.or whatever. this has been discussed many times in the past and i would imagine you'll find lots of threads about it.

Perfect. My initial search turned up nothing. When I re-ran it with quotes around the terms (e.g. "pickup height")....Bingo, I was deluged w/ pertinent info.

The pickups definitely do sound better @ 5/64". I'm going to lower the pickup another 1/16" which should put me in the "3 quarters" ballpark.

Chris..............Thanks

I believe our buddy, Ricky Davis, has been a big proponent of the 3 Quarters (U.S.) measurement for a long time.
