Hi Gang. I just heard a guy by the name of Josh Taylor on youtube that just blew me away.
I have no idea how to post it on the Forum, but I wish someone would.
I think the song is called "Walk Around Heaven", a very moving ballad.

Sounds like "Lucky Old Sun," a Frankie Laine hit recorded beautifully by the (notorious) Jerry Garcia Band (he played guitar on it). The "walk around heaven" comes from the line in the song, "that lucky old sun's got nothing to do, but roll around heaven all day." Great song, deals with a central theological/philosophical issue, viz.: of all the possible ways to order the universe, why do we live in one where we have to work (I used to play this in a jam band whose drummer was working on his theology Ph.D so we had some nice chats about it); nice playing by Mr. Taylor, especially some of those precise little ornaments. If you haven't heard it sung (or sung it) you've got to. The lyrics are as strong as the rest of the song.

If I recall, Brother Ray Charles did a killer version of 'Lucky Old Sun" as well.

Ray Charles was in a class all by himself.

I wonder if any of you heard his version of the Stevie Wonder tune, "Livin' For The City", from the LP called Renaissance on Crossover Records.

I would love to get another copy. (my ex-wife sold it).

Josh is a killer player. I first heard him at the very first Sacred Steel convention in Florida. He came out and played a six string lap which had a pickup which barely worked. He totally killed it, his set was one of the highlights of the night. I think that Josh was the first recipient of the Sacred Steel instrument fund (as a matter of fact, I think he was the inspiration for the fund).

Josh is a great guy and very humble, but when he gets behind that guitar, watch out. He's not going to take any prisoners.....

Dan, what is the fund? Does it provide instruments to promising players? BTW, I agree, he sounds great.

There is a killer version of this song by The Caravans, probably Shirley Caesar doing the singing. I recorded an instrumental version on my "Strong Like Bull" CD.

However, Dan is right. Josh is a very soulful player. Did anybody click on Nikki Brown after watching the Josh video? She's no slouch either. Very cool.

Here's one, Shades of Texas Swing with very good bar technique. I believe he is way ahead of RR as far as pedal us is concerned. Enjoy, DS

There is another Josh Taylor youtube but it is titled the same as this one. On it, he is playing a six-string lap steel, and bringing it big-time. This one doesn't have a picture of him on the beginning.
I'm just going to have to find out how to post youtube on the forum.

Hello Andy,

Yes, that is the same Josh Taylor playing lap steel at the first Sacred Steel Convention in Florida.
This is the clip that Dan Tyack mentioned when he talked about the Sacred Steel Instrument fund.

Thanks for the heads-up, Del.
There is a wealth of inspiration on theses various youtube offerings.
Because most are live recordings, the fidelity is somewhat lacking, but there is no denying the passion and commitment that shines through.

Joe,

The fund is somewhat in hiatus right now, since the Sacred Steel Conventions are in hiatus (there hasn't been one for a few years). This wasn't anything official, just a bunch of musicians who donated instruments for young Sacred Steel players. These donations were done under the auspices of the Arhoolie Foundation in order to get proper donation records for tax purposes.

Hopefully the conventions will start again, I'm not exactly sure why they've been on hold.

Hello Dan,

Bob Stone recently posted a flyer of the next Sacred Steel Convention in the Events Announcement section.
Elton Noble is producing a Sacred Steel Convention in Ft. Pierce, Florida, Friday April 4-Saturday April 5, 2008. It should be great.
