I am a 61 year old bass player. Have loved country music since I was a boy in the 1950’s and especially steel guitar. Started steel guitar using the Scotty book about two months ago. I may not live long enough to get good at it but am having a ball exploring.
I am playing 8 string A6 with a high E strung up on an old pedal steel that I took the pedal rods off of. Started with 6 string C6 but added two more strings a month or so ago using a set I bought from Mr. Bobbe. I love this forum. I have already gotten lots and lots of great information via searches. And I am humbled by the names/reputations of the players who post here.
Finally, a question: I find most tabs don’t indicate very much use of the low strings, and in my beginner efforts I tend to stay away from the low strings. But I love my high E string. Reading this forum has made me want a Stringmaster. Would it work out OK to string a 6 string steel with the top 6 strings of my A6 with high E, omitting the bottom two? Would I eventually miss them if I really do make progress in my learning? My reason for asking is that I think I could maybe find a quality 6 string cheaper/easier than a 8 string. Too long for a newbie post but …

Welcome! A Stringmaster (and its single neck variant, the Deluxe- are 8 string instruments. I believe the Champ is a 6 string.
As an 8-string player myself, I'd say stick with the 8 string you have. Do tell us what 8 string pedal steel you have. If it's a Fender you'll get lots of advice on setups from us Fender 400/1000 players!

Thanks. My old pedal steel is a "homemade". Its a long story but about 30 years ago me and my buddy wanted pedal steels. He found out about a guy in Riedsville NC who was trying to start a steel guitar business. Unfortunately he had passed away, and we bought his stock of parts and a few bodies from his widow. Mostly it was pretty crude, but I finally got a single neck 10 put together. Never worked quite right.
What got me thinking about 6 string is this one on ebay (don't know how to post a link, but Item number is 7418001513) It is six string, described as "stringmaster" and has the two pickups with what looks like the blend knob. |

Hey, no problem. You're welcome......
Well, what did you expect for 5 bucks?
In my little experienced opinion, I would stick to the 8 string, or bide your time and wait for an 8 to come up.
You can always string it with 6 strings and have the option of 7 or 8 strings if you want it. Also, even if you don't use the two low strings, you can always string it with an "out of order" string or two.

Thanks to all of you for the nice welcomes and advice.
I havn't figured out yet how to embed a link, but there is what looks like a nice single 8 on ebay item 7418008143. Starting bid is $800.00. Is that a fair price? |

Hi Dale. Although the price seems a bit high (and although the seller is the much ridiculed Guitar Center who usually set absurd prices but not always), prices on these are only going up and it won't be long before we are looking back and calling this a good price, IMO. Good looking guitar, too. If you have the $$ and aren't too hung up on getting a price that you can brag about, I'd say go for it. (Important disclaimer: this is your money that I am spending here.) |

I'll agree with Jon. You can keep an eye out and possibly find this a little cheaper, but maybe not. As of this writing, there's two minutes left in the the auction.

If that's you, Dale, who beat out the last second snipe, congrats! Let us know about the guitar if/when you have it in hand. |

Yep. That was me. Sale price was $2.50 less than my max. Had me sweating. Now all I have to do is learn to play. |
