George, I did the same thing today! Its a new version of it I guess. I usually run it and others once a week. Preventive maintenance is what we used to call it in the Army! Ray _________________ Ray Qualls

Spybot Search and Destroy has just released version 1.5.2.20. If you have not changed the default update settings, you will receive the newest version, in your updates. Regarding the file your mentioned, it sounds like a setup file for v 1.5.2, which you may have to run manually to upgrade your current version.
You can check your current version by opening Spybot S&D and looking at the version number in the large gray bar near the top, or by going to Help > About. If you don't have the new version you should go get it, via Help > Home Page.
Run the installer George, after checking for viruses first.
Let me know if you have any more questions about this. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Same happened to me. I got the new version trying to update the old. Now when I try to run the new one, I get a box saying "file corrupted, download again". The old one did actually update, too and runs fine. ???? |

From what I have seen after updating several computers, with previous versions of Spybot S&D, the program updates to the new version, restarts it, then deposits a copy of the setup file on your desktop, in case you need to reinstall the program. You can move the new setup file to your downloads folder, whatever it might be. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Or you can just delete that file altogether. That's what I do immediately as soon as I have installed a new program. When successfully installed, the setup file is not needed any more. |

Until something goes wrong and you have to reinstall it. I keep downloaded setup files on hand until a new version is released, then delete old setups. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

If and when something goes wrong I just go back to the site and download it again. I just hate unnecessary files on my pc. That's just me. Wish I could keep my real desk top as clean as my virtual one... |

Wiz,
Can you offload the file to another computer, and install it cold, as in (a computer without the old version on it)?
Thanks..BF _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers

I've downloaded and installed several versions of
Spybot over the years and every time, it has flagged a valid file(s) for removal. The last time I tried it was about a month ago. I fixed a customer's PC that he had run Spybot on and he let it delete everything it flagged and it had deleted a valid and needed file. |

But Jack, does it not tell you that the file in question is of more or less importance for removal as far as security?
I can't seem to recall now, party because I have 3 different progs like that, but I was under the impression that it does tell you.
Spybot SD was the program that told me right away that I had a trojan or spyware during my recent difficulties.
It is definitely a "must have", in addition to Norton, Adaware, Spy Doctor etc |

Yes, it is a complete setup file and there is no registration required, because Spybot Search and Destroy is now and always has been free.
Jack is correct that Spybot sometimes flags legitimate files as malware, but I have always reviewed every selected item before removing it. If you do accidentally delete a necessary file, because of a false positive, you can restore it, using the built-in recovery utility. False positives are usually discovered quickly and new definitions are issued to stop the false detections, in the next release, which is every Wednesday (or as soon as confirmed, using beta detections).
I recommend that everybody using Spybot S&D review every detected item in the malware list, before deleting them and learn to use the recovery button, just in case. If you see something that you know is not a threat, "exclude it" from further detections and ignore it (don't delete).
FWIW: Almost every major anti virus and anti spyware vendor has released flawed detections, resulting in the deletion of system files. A month ago, Kaspersky Anti-Virus flagged Windows Explorer as a virus and deleted it from hundreds of thousands of Windows machines, before the false positive was reported!
