I had to buy a new PC. Unfortunately it came with VISTA.

I can't even get the damn deafault sound going.
If anybody's been kinda following my dilemma, I ordered up a replcement Audigy CD from Creative.

Well, after installing it and finding out it DOESN"T FFFFFF work, cuz it says "will not work with ffffff Vista, I flipped out.

But now, I can't even get any sound out of my speakers. Except the anal rfetentives Windows sounds.

Thsi VISTA is bullshit. You can nnot find any thing that you uased to fiund easily. It's a stroke. it sucks.

Chip, if you click on start/properties you can give the start menu and task bar a "classic windows" look which helps some but I agree with you. I hate Vista too, it sucks!!!. Also when you access the control panel you can change it to a more familar look instead of the Vista style which sucks!!!

Chip, I have two Vista PC's - a desktop and a laptop and EVERYTHING works properly. On the desktop PC, everything I had working in XP also works in Vista.

With the problems you had with the old PC and now basically having some of the same problems, I've got to think it's not the PC's.

I use Mac most of the time, but I bought a new Compaq laptop w/ Vista Home premium on it (basically so I could dual-boot it with Linux) and everything seems to work OK. Movies play, music plays, Flash websites work, Photoshop runs. Kinda surprising, after all the negativity there is regarding Vista, but I've just been doing basic stuff with it. Two downsides: all the preloaded free offers and trials, and networking is ridiculously confusing compared to a Mac.

Jack,

You use Audigy, don't you? Have you got it working with Vista? Is there some additional patch or driver that's needed?

Somehow the default sound is working this morning. I checked off a few things in Realtek HD Audio Manager, and I must of bumbled on the right check-offs.

Hey, I know it's all my fault.

Thanks,

Chipper

Yes, I have SB the Audigy 2 Platinum EX on my Vista machine. I know that the Audigy SE works on Vista as there have been many on the Dell users forum that have installed the Audigy SE in place of the SigmaTel integrated audio.

The only issue with installing an aftermarket sound card is that usually the card with not interface with whatever connector there is for the front panel headphone jack (and mic jack) that is on many new PC's.

I'll try to install again. I didn't even get to plugging in the speakers connector. I would connect them to the SB in the rear of the pc.

As I was installing the 1st time, a flag popped up and said that this program is not recognized.

I just received an Audigy replacement CD from Creative, too.

When you install a PCI sound card there are two things to do. (1) disable the on-board audio (usually in the BIOS). (2) when you install a SoundBlaster sound card and start Windows (Vista) it will come up with a panel about looking for and installing drivers. DO NOT let Windows (Vista) do that, cancel out that function and after the startup is completed, load the SoundBlaster CD (if it has Vista drivers on it, otherwise download the Vista drivers from the soundblaster site - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL WINDOWX XP DRIVERS ARE THEY ARE INCOMPATIBLE AND CAN MESS UP YOUR PC, Vista handles audio differently than XP) and run the installation, which will install the drivers and extra software.
