I have had two experiences with Tommy's mods.

I bought a used Mullen RP and was greatly dissappointed with it's tone and sustain. It was DEAD. I had trouble chiming open at the 12th fret. Tommy performed his mod and the Mullen sounded better but not great.

Years ago I had a BMI that my daughter thought sounded better than any I've had before or since. It sounded very good. (Naturally I eventually traded it for "something better"). Recently, I picked up another, similar BMI. It did not sound good or sustain well. Tommy modded the BMI and it sounds great all up and down the neck and has excellent sustain. And, Tommy couldn't do every mod due to the BMI's construction.

In all instrument types, there are untold technical influences that give each a different sound. Some sound good to us, some bad. We've all heard cheap instruments that sound amazing, and expensive instruments that are DEAD. Probability says most are "average". Some can be fixed. Some are just duds.

I did not publicly comment on the Mullen because there are instruments that won't sound good. This one happened to be a Mullen.

Tommy has worked, experimented, studied, etc., and discovered certain modifications that "usually" improve a pedal steel's tone and sustain.

Congratulations Tommy for being good and lucky.

JM

I'm yet to see or play a guitar Tommy has modded that didn't sound good. His work is especially obvious with guitars before and after modifications are completed. Try it before and then afterwards. His mod's are the real deal. Truth will be in the sound, no doubt!

THANKS GENTLEMEN for the threads and the thought's as many has stated there has always been an improvement on a guitar when I worked on it. I have made more improvements as the years go by to my max-tone mod this is just such a difference. I will continue to work to improve it as long as ""GOD"" gives me the talent to do so. I also do other work on steel guitars besides my mod.

PS: BILLY i certainly appreciate the kind words from way down south my friend

I am improving each day from my surgery guy's I should be back at work real soon hopefully

i'll throw this in, with the permission of a steeler, not a forumite, that had work performed by tommy on his emmons/lagrande last fall.
he had purchased this horn, new, from ron and had played it for years. not satisfied with several things about it but under the impression that it was all "in the hands".
he decided that he would trust tommy's hands to go over the unit and correct anything that he felt needed attention.
at the last minute after a phone conversation concerning the prognosis, my friend opted to include the "max-tone" mod.his reason being that tommy was very reasonable on the price of the correction tweaking and add-on. he has yet to meet tommy in real life only on the phone.
he also added another knee kicker while it was there.
when he recieved the emmons back he was blown-away!
(1)at the ease of playing the right notes at the right places on the neck.
(2)at the "max-tone" quality.the best tone ever!
he was so impressed that he immediately sent tommy his brand new "rains" that he had purchased when he gave up on the emmons for a "max-tone" mod!
upon the quick turn-around return, he was again blown-away! night and day difference!!!
anyway i guess what i mean is tommy is a sure fire steel technician. "tommy young man of steel"
country.............

Billy Carr you got it exactly right. Tommy has just amazed me as he has everyone else with his modification.
Hang in there Tommy, because in time you're gonna make a lot more believers with this mod. Such a difference it makes in the overall tone, sustain, and clarity of this beautiful instrument. (no more screaming highs)
I don't recall ever meeting anyone who had ears for tone like Tommy.

On occasion you may have noticed in different posts Tommy refer to the "Black Mullen" that he modded that had "the tone". As the proud owner of that particular guitar I can state that it certainly does. Without a doubt the best sounding guitar I have ever owned (and I have owned many). I usually describe it as "ringing like a bell!"

Oh yes Mr. Bolinger thanks for the bump and your thoughts as you are one that had me MOD one of your guitars 3 years ago, then again about a year ago had me to go back and add all of the newer enhancements to it . Now you have 2 of my modified for tone Guitars 1 at the largest family music shows in the state of MS. """and without a doubt the best as it has had since the start a full house at nearly all its shows"""and the other guitar is at your church for the LORD'S enjoyment as you and many others have more than one of my guitarsPS: Thank you for all the business my friend
