Sounds "Italian" to me but likely a very good violin.

Maravelli does not turn up in the 1943 edition of "Known Violin Makers," French or otherwise.

Can you post some photos?

In my travels I have not encountered a Guiseppi Maravelli. The name sounds more Italian to me. If it is a modern Italian made from wood as you describe and in good condition, it is well worth the price you are asking. If I could see pics, I could clear up the French/modern Italian question for you.

Can you provide any info on the bow? Bows can be worth more than fiddles. Consider posting it here as well http://www.fiddlehangout.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=6

Good luck!

Could be a French copy of a Guiseppe Maravelli violin. He was a maker in Naples, Italy, in the early 19th century.

It should be professionally appraised to know it's true value...could be hundreds, could be thousands.

Actually I brought this violin to a very well respected violin shop in Montreal and was told they would not sell the violin for less than $1500.This was also where I was told its a french fiddle dating back to around 1925. Brian

Have you had it long? Pictures would be a great help. Especially of the label as well.. Any date on the label? Usually made with the label already made for the first portion era of the year, and hand written in for the exact last two numbers on the year it was made.
