A few months ago someone posted a link to Martin
Gross and his pedal sounding Dobro. What a nice
player who gets it right! Look him up on YouTube.
I picked up on the idea and worked out a little instrumental called "Dobro Stretch". You take the
standard Bluegrass Tuning and simply drop the
second string to A. You pull that string a full tone
to get the pedal effect and it is done with the
ball of the left ring finger. See pic below. You will
note the mark indicating that part of the ball of the finger which does the pulling or stretching.
I do this instrumental Thumb Style and Solo
The stretch on top and the Thumb below.

That trick has been around for a long time. Gene Wooten used to do it regularly. As some might know,
Gene worked at Sho-Bud, putting pedal steels together, so the idea was just natural to him. He
could drop that string down, do a few bend licks and have it back up in tune in a flash. Gene also had
the nerve to kick off songs from dead silence with a two fret slant. An amazing player. |

That technique was coverd in Stacy Phillips book(The Dobro Book) way back when. I broke both ring fingers as a teenager playing baseball (a Catcher, don't you know?). The resulting joint deformities don't allow for this technique.

| I use a G6 tuning for choir GBEGBD lo to hi on the 6 and EGBDEGBD on the 8. Lots of songs call for sus chords and I pull them off the maj 3rd. Nice effect. Good job on the "Stretch" |

Thanks for having a listen my friends and
your comments.
I was aware that the string pull featured
on my clip above was not something new and that others have done it before me. However, I guess
what I was trying to demonstrate was that the
effect can be used simultaneously with thumbstyle
or Travis style. I have not heard anyone else do it
on Dobro 
If you know of someone please tell me as I would
like to expand on Solo playing using both techniques
at the same time in one take. No band.
