Laptop Rebooting Problem

My Son's laptop took a tumble and Vista would not boot up. I reformatted the hard drive and it seemed to help but sometimes it still hangs up when rebooting. If I can get it to boot up in safe mode and then do a restart, chances are good it will continue to reboot properly. Did the tumble loosen something? Is there something I can check? Did the hard drive become damaged to warrant a replacement? HELP!
