The Northeast Iowa Steel Guitar Show provides a free guitar and free one on one lessons for one year under the title, "Jump Start Academy". It gives the steel guitar student the opportunity to learn the basics at no cost and hopefully the incentive to purchase a guitar and continue to play after the first year. Sometimes there isn't an instructor nearby and we are considering the use of video instruction as a supplement. We would welcome input and recommendations of beginner video courses to use for our JSA.
Thanks,

Dennis,
Based on my experience in the UK (and Europe), in my view the following Jeffran Music DVD-based courses can't be beaten. They're all available from Fran Newman - see www.jeffran.com
Pedal Steel Guitar Techniques / Right Hand Alpha
(these should be taken together) - used properly, I'd say there's probably 6 months work here, for your average beginner)
After that,
Up From The Top (A&B Pedals)
Up From The Top (D lever)
Up From The Top (F lever)
These three courses total 10-hours of DVD time and again in my view, there's probably 3 years work here!
Certainly, this group of courses has helped many beginner players I know to reach a very good standard of playing. Of course, during the learning period, there's nothing like getting in a band and putting the learned material into practice.

I concur with my colleague from across the pond wholeheartedly. Those are the five essential Newman courses, with or without a private teacher.
Working with these five courses, having private instruction as well, AND playing in a band is the combination for quickest success. Oh, and a great amount of dedication combined with perserverance. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Newman all the way. Nothing better on the market today or in near the future. There will never be another talent like JEFF NEWMAN. The man had a God Given Gift to teach and play steel guitar. He still lives @ JEFFRAN Music. Let us all keep him here with us for many years to come. Fran is the best and is carrying the tourch.
I also agree with Herb. Get out and play that thing like you stole it. Dedication is required and it will pay off for the new player.
Thanks

Get Right Hand Alpha first, and give yourself a few weeks (months) with that.
After you can pick that way, the world is your oyster. |
