Gary Anwyl has created a page devoted to the fine steel guitarist Bob Pauole and his musical partner Jim Holstein. As Jim & Bob, the Genial Hawaiians, they performed on Chicago radio stations during the 1930s and recorded a few classics, among them the most amazing version of "Home on the Range" you'll ever hear on steel guitar (under the title "Song of the Range").
Go here to appreciate Gary's work. Thanks!

My original intent was to collect some information on reissues with links to audio clips. I figured it would help people trying to track down their recordings.
But then I got into an email exchange with Les Cook of Grass Skirt Records. He gave some "new" information he had about Jim and Bob and gave me permission to share it.
Be sure to check out the Honolulu Advertiser article and the WENR brochure. It is something most people haven't seen before.

Thanks Gary. Jim and Bob were among the greatest. I second Brad's comments on "Song of the Range," and will add that the 30-sec samples do not include the best parts. The song is worth the price of the whole CD, in my opinion. |

Hi Gary,
I have a piece of sheet music copyrighted 1930 with a picture inset on the cover of what looks like Jim and Bob, but who are identified as "Jim and Bud", "The Crooning Guitarists" Middle West Radio Stars.
I always thought it was a typo also. I bought the sheet music for the picture. I've never seen it published elsewhere.

When I messed around with trying to figure out "song of the range" a couple of years ago, it seemed like it was in high A tuning? Does anyone know for sure what tuning it was done in? Al Capon no doubt had these guys play music for him when he was entertaining the ladies on the other side of a curtain from his bedroom. Mobsters and Hawaiian music, a strange but true fact. Scott, that's an interesting photo. The guitarist resembles Jim Holstein somewhat, but if I had to guess I'd say it's not him.
When I was searching through the newspaper archives for Jim and Bob stuff I did look for "Jim and Bud" and "Crooning Guitarists", but I didn't find anything.

By the way, here's a little bit of background on the song "Home on the Range". It was Franklin Roosevel's favorite song and was a popular tune during the 30's.

Great picture of Jim and Bud! I'm pretty certain they were a different act .Mal Rockwell would know for sure .There was also a duo called Jim and Ken who cut at least one 78 for Champion ...a fine enough record ,but not up to Bob Pauole's standard .Dave Stewart put it out on one of his MP3 discs a while back [This message was edited by Les Cook on 08 May 2006 at 04:36 AM.] [This message was edited by Les Cook on 08 May 2006 at 04:36 AM.] |
