Everyday I learn or see something new about steel guitars. I've never seen a plastic string cover used by Fender but did some forum searching and learned it was made. Is this guitar valuable?

Auction on eBay.

This white plastic bridge cover was only on the WHITE lap steels (Fender), as far as I know. The WHITE brand was named after Fender plant manager Forrest White, and was made from 1955 to 1960. This brand was produced by Fender to sell to teaching studios and music dealers who did not carry the regular Fender line. It's basically a Champ with legs. These guitars came with a matching WHITE amp.

It's hard to assess the value in today's crazy market, but I'd say it's worth somewhere between $500 and $750 in all original excellent condition, w/case and legs. Deduct for any missing parts, non-original parts, refinish, excessive wear, etc. The SET (steel & amp) would be the winning ticket.

PS, back in the 1970s I got one of these for Free, and I ended up selling it for $40. Ouch!

Shame about the case.

My bandleader uses a White amp for his harmonica. Killer tone! I tried to research it for value and came up empty handed. He paid $300 for it about two years ago. I thought that was a great deal.

I had a very similar steel years ago. It had been stripped and refinished. Looked like walnut, but I'm no expert. It had the same shape and fretboard (with the little numbers on the frets), and it had a Fender nameplate and a metal bridge cover. The case was a different color. A very nice guitar - I regret selling it to this day.

I remember seein a guitar and amp set on eBay within the last couple of years and as I remember it sold for around $800-1000. With the crazy prices on good guitars these days I wish I had jumped on it now.

The White amp is said to be identical to the Princeton of that era and fetch better than $1000 in good shape.

This boy's twin brother sold a few months ago for $625 with a better case. The last "White" amp I saw was tagged at $1200.
