The string separation on pedal steels is usually closer than on non-pedal. Both seem to be closer than Dobros or Weissenborns.

Am I the only one who finds the spacing too narrow, or is it just my big fingers ?

Pedal steel guitars do have a close string spacing. Most non-pedal guitars usually have a string spacing of 3/8 of an inch at the bridge and a bit closer at the nut.

It's an adjustment thing, not something I worry too much about. If a pedal steel had the same string spacing as a Dobro® you'd need a foot long steel bar to play it!
