Well, as much as I like to talk, I do not enjoy promotional advertising, but here I go.
We got so many requests to do more tracks of our CD's with vocals intact and Russ'steel...banished somewhere in Siberia....(just kidding, okay? ) that we decided it would be fun to do a series tributing our favorite Artists. Here's what we have done.
There are a total of 9 new CD's available for this project. Each CD contains 6 songs, but each of those 6 songs has two complete tracks; the first is a performance cut including Russ on steel, playing intros, fills, and turnarounds, according to him, "as they should of course be played" (and now you know why I made the "Siberia" jab). Immediately following that cut is a repeat of the same song without steel, and that is where "you" come in, if you choose to and exercise your "side man" skills. (but, don't be intimidated by "how much" Russ played on the previous cut, many side men choose "not" to cover up the singer....(oh, I'm really dead now! But, I must admit this has turned out to be more fun than I thought it would be! )
The new "YOU DO THE STEEL" CD series:
LANEY sings RAY PRICE
LANEY sings CONNIE SMITH
LANEY sings MERLE HAGGARD
LANEY sings BUCK OWENS
LANEY sings KITTY WELLS
LANEY sings PATSY CLINE
LANEY sings GEORGE JONES
LANEY sings TAMMY WYNETTE
LANEY sings JIM REEVES
This has allowed me the pleasure of singing many of my favorite songs, some for the first time ever. I hope this interactive project is something some of you steelers out there will enjoy and find useful. We didn't get to a couple of other Artist choices that I would love to do, so with any luck at all, perhaps this project may continue.
IF YOU'RE GOING TO ST. LOUIS, BE SURE TO COME BY RUSS' BOOTH, SAY HELLO, AND LOOK THINGS OVER.
Now that I've dutifully insulted him, I really should let you know that he has a couple of new projects himself that really... aren't all that bad...(oh my gosh, it's like a drug! )
Actually, they're both just GREAT. Russell Eldorado Hicks at his best.
RUSS'new CD's are:
TURNAROUND
On this CD, Russ "trades places" with me and "lets" me do his intro's, turnarounds, and tags vocally while he plays the verses and choruses instrumentally. (He said he's waited a long time to finally put me in my "proper" place...)
ME MYSELF and I
On this CD, Russ is his only "studio musician". He does it all, musically and technically, and he reveals, without a doubt, why I've always known he's one of the most gifted, talented musicians I've ever heard. (and, that's no joke)
I am, however, concerned ,now that I notice, that his two new projects are so "self" indulgent. Hmmmmmm...
God bless all!
Laney
P.S. Most important: This project absolutely could not have been accomplished without the creative ideas and technical expertise of RANDY WEIDEMAN to whom we are eternally indebted and grateful. Thanks, Randy, for everything. |

Hey Sweet Pea, what about us old codgers who for some unknown reason can't go to St. Louis? What is the cost and where can we get the new CD's. (Yours are the ones I'm speaking of). Hey Alan,
Thanks for asking; see, if I were a better promoter I'd have included that particular info already.
I will be happy to handle any orders by mail my very own self:
send $15.00 per CD, plus $3.00 shipping
or ...all 9 CD's for $100, plus $5.00 shipping to:
Hicks Music
1020 West Sears Road
Pegram, TN 37143
I know I didn't list the song titles on each CD for the forum post but, you can almost guess from the artists' names which 6 of their biggest hits we selected to record. I'll be happy to get specific for anyone who really wants to know, and they are listed on the CD's.
and, thanks for calling me Sweet Pea; I'm a southern girl and we still like that sort of thing.
Thanks to my best bud, Brett, too!

I have to be honest, after Street Singer, I'm not sure which other 5 Haggard hits you've chosen. Oh, perhaps I know one of them. You wouldn't have missed a chance to do "You Take Me For Granted". I'll stop by and see you two at Scotty's.
Just to put you on the spot, Laney, is there a Johnny Bush CD in the works for this series?
Say howdy to our buddy Milton Montz (sp?) for me... Look fortward to seeing him at Scotty's. _________________ HagFan

I would like to thank both Russ and Laney for having trust and faith and giving me, a small town person, and a special opportunity to feel so very important on this very special project. Russ and Laney have been a real inspiration for me and wonderful dear friends.
Thanks to Russ and Laney I have had many opportunities to meet many of my musical heroes and I would like to thank them for that. Without You, Russ and Laney, I am sure that I would not have these special memories I now have with me FOREVER.
I have Posted All the CD's with Audio MP3 Clips for everyone to listen too and enjoy as well.

Russ and Laney I love you both. Many more projects over the hill.

Tony,
I'm sorry but you'll have to wait for the release of my "Crimson Tide Bear Bryant Forever" tracks before you'll be eligible to make any further purchases. Until you're up to speed on your team selection, how could I in good conscience take advantage of your obvious limited ability to choose ANYTHING, let alone which CD would serve you best...first things first young man.
Ron,
I have to be honest, we tried to include "You Take Me For Granted", but everytime I got to the punch line of the song, my volume level exceeded the distortion indicator on the mixing board...so we cut "That's The Way Love Goes" instead.
Ernest,
Can you give me a hint on that CD Russ owes you? I've learned, the more ammunition I have the better when attempting to "jog" his memory. Like most men, he doesn't have that special "gift" we women have that allows us to remember EVERYTHING!!!!!!
Young Jeremy,
Well, you nearly lost me with that "twice as old" stuff, regardless of how true it is, but I liked the part about enjoying backing me up...nice save. Thanks for being a real trooper, and keep playing.
Dear Calvin,
Some time ago I actually looked into the methodology of Tablature... and found it to be more mind boggling than sitting behind that odd machine and struggling to make a pleasant sound come out of it. I regret that there is no Tab to go along with these CD's, but I have every faith in your heart's ability to "find itself" in your instrument.
Just havin' a little fun. Thanks guys.

Hey Laney, playin' along with your cd would make me think of playin' steel onstage with ya, like I did in Saluda-that was amazing! The opportunity to play steel with you is one of the best things that ever happened in my life.
Love ya,

Being a new player this could be fun. I'll send for a couple. Maybe you could expand the series. You know, ones with no bass and maybe for our other friend some with no drums. SOmetimes we could use the practice. |

Then you needed to start quieter. Oh well, at least you got to try it out and give your steel player a look whenever you got to the chorus-- punch line, as you say. Sara Evans does that song as well as anyone I've ever heard... okay, anyone except Merle.
I'm sure whatever hits you chose they'll have tons of steel and really give us HagFans something to aspire to. _________________ HagFan

Hi Alan,
Good to hear from you. Before I go further, please hug Bev for me.
I have the perfect response to your post, but I just can't do it.
You, however, are one of the finest bass players we know...and, our "friend"...that drummer (Jim Hartley)is high on the list, too! It's a treat to make music with the likes of both of you! Hope to do more of it.

Hey Laney, I'm glad I got to play steel onstage with ya. I've backed up a few singers at shows, but you're the best singer I've played steel with at the shows, and I remember too, Russ was really amazed.
Love ya!

Ernest, Ernest, Ernest,
It seems that you have fallen prey to the craftiest of villains....a silver tongued devil, which surprises me, your being a steeler yourself and all...
Would you mind emailing your mailing address, or if you'll be in St. Louis, I'll get Chuck Campbell to work him over for you as you collect that CD.
Hope all is well with the family and our very special little guy.
