I'm new to the Lap steel I have a 6 string and the songs are 8 string songs. What do I do about the 7th and 8th string notes when I play the songs. _________________ Kevin Armstrong |

Kevin,Why don't you just get a sixstring course,Scottys would be a good place to look,Just go to the links here on the forum, you will find plenty of courses and tab for six string.Saint Louis Blues is a good one for six string,You can get the rhythum tracks and tab for several songs.DYKBC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. I have the melbay course but I also have some music for an 8th string. I just wanted to know if you can play the music from an 8th string on a six string or if you have to fing 6 string music. _________________ Kevin Armstrong |

I play 8 and 6, it's not that difficult, A C E G A C E G, OR C E G A C E . A two note chord is a two note chord. Makes no difference if EG is played on strings 1 and 2 or 1 and 4. it's still the same two note chord just on different strings.

Kevin, this is just my opinion only[a lot of times i'm wrong]But if you just have six strings and are just beginning,I think it would be less confusing if you would get you some sixstring material[there is plenty out there]And I think you have to use at least three notes or more to play chord,DYKBC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. I don't have an eight string anymore and but use my eight string tab everyday on my six strings. You didn't say what tuning you were using but here's my suggestion. Tune to the A6 tuning of
C# E F# A C# E (low to high). That will give you the top six strings of the eight string A6 tuning of F# A C# E F# A C# E. Most notes that show up on the 7th and 8th strings could be harmony notes and while your learning could be left out. You'll find that you can play a ton of songs on just the first six strings. I'm using Herb Remington's Fun Tab and the Rick Alexander/Herb Remington Tuff Fun Tab course and do not miss the 7 & 8 strings at all.
A quick comment about the C6 tuning. If you use the six string C6 tuning of E G A C E G (low to high) instead of the more common tuning, C E G A C E you can still use the eight string tab as eight string C6 is usually A C E G A C E G, and as long as the fifth note of the scale is on top, ie. the 5 note, G in C6, E in A6 you can interchange the tabs. C6 tab can be played with A6 tuning (the pitch will be lower by three frets, or 1 1/2 tones) and A6 tab can be played with C6 tuning (the pitch will be higher by three frets of 1 1/2 tones). Two lap steels or a double neck six will be in your future I'm thinking. Enjoy the ride.
