Hi.
It's finally time to change strings on my Fender Deluxe 8 (22.5"scale) and I'm considering switching from low C6 (F on the bottom) to high C6. I just think it will be more useful for me (I'm not that good and swear I've never even played that low string).
However... I'm having a hard time finding a pre-assembled set or even a consensus on string gauges for this tuning. I've searched through the archives, I've seen the high C6 Jagwire (Herb Remington) set for sale under "Strings," I've seen Cindy Cashdollar's choice of gauges (I lover her sound) and still have questions... so I thought it might be good to have a focused discussion on this topic here.
Currently I'm using the Scotty's C6 set. The easiest thing would seem to be buying these again and throwing a .12 on top. I like the semi-flat nickel strings, though when I got the guitar it was set up with some very old flat wounds, which were interesting.
Your thoughts? Discuss...

I had a similar experience on the low C6 with the F on the bottom. On the high C6 I'm finding that I still play almost everything on the middle six. But I have lately bought the A6 (same as high C6 but a minor 3rd lower) Tuff Fun Tab by Herb Remington and Rick Alexander. The accompanying CD is in A6. So you will want to have a guitar to tune to A6 if you want to use the CD. Mr. Remington has two other books of Tuff Fun Tab without accompanying CD. They will work for high C6. I'm hoping the three courses will enlighten me some regarding the two additional strings. I can neither recommend nor criticize the courses, though, because I haven't actually recieved them yet. But I do have to wonder how wrong could I go with Herb Remington.
As for string guages, I would have to ask your scale length. I find the sets sold on the forum are not that good for short scale instruments. I'm buying a custom guage set that goes 14-16-20-22-26-32-38-44. Again, though, I haven't actually put that on my guitar. So I can't say how successful it's going to be. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Just look under "Strings" here on the Forum. A Herb Remington set is listed. Billy |

Hi Eric, I have a short scale Fender Deluxe 8, and have been stringing up with the Herb Remington strings from the forum, albeit in A6 tuning.
I know C6 seems to be the "standard" tuning, however, as Edward pointed out, A6 is just a minor third lower than C6, the shapes/patterns/relationships remain the same.
I can't say enough good things about Herb and Ricks' Tuff Fun Tab.... interesting arrangements that present some challenges, yet are very playable with a little work. Lots of slants too!
No connection here, just a happy customer!
All the best with whichever way you decide to go. _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |
