Whatever (Fender?) Freddy Tavares played on the "Looney Tunes" open.
You didn't say pedal steel (section title notwithstanding). _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

Ben,
So right, I didn't specify pedals. That's why Don Helms' guitar is on my personal list. I had forgotten about the Loony Tunes opening! |

I'd bet, if you asked a bunch of non-musicians, the most common answer would be 'the one on that Dire Straits cover'. |

I think you could call either the Emmons or Sho~Bud steel guitars "famous", but I don't think you could narrow it down to one specific instrument. Even in the straight guitar world (where players and their instruments are far better known), it'd be hard to pick out the single most "famous" guitar. |

The Fender Custom on Santo and Johnny's Sleep Walk |
I agree Baz, but isn't that a Stringmaster?
Santo's Fender is/was probably the 'most seen' steel guitar ever. Robert Randolph's blue Fessenden is also up there.
I agree with the comments above about no steel guitar being 'famous'... among the gereral public. The average person would only recognize a certain instrument if it were seen on the album cover or promo pictures of an artist with big hit records.

If you were to look at Steel Guitars that were heard by the masses..then I would say the guitar that Jerry Garcia used on Teach your Children (maybe the one Pete Burak owns)would be the "One"......but for steel players(or just me)it would have to be the NightLife Sho~Bud......OR the Together Again Fender |

Doug, It's been long assumed that Sleepwalk was recorded on a Stringmaster, then why is there a video from their early era showing Johnny playing a Fender Custom.
The "Trap" Pickup is visible as is the neck selector switch and the Fender logo between the 1st and 2nd necks. Undoubtedly a "Custom"
Was "Sleepwalk" recorded with a Custom or a Stringmaster ?
This Sleeve MAY have led to the confusion :-
I'm also looking for information about the circumstances of the writing of Sleepwalk and it's lyrics.
Some articles credit their mother with the lyrics, some their sister Ann and some credit Don Wolf.
What IS the truth ?
Also, where is Santo now and why didn't he come to the convention to receive his award.
Are the 40 plus albums they're credited with on the SGHOF Plaque all different or just re-packaged re-releases and compilations ?
I'm doing tab of the EXACT way SANTO played Sleepwalk and want to include some FACTUAL info rather than help proliferate some of the urban myths that are "Doing the Rounds" recently.
Maybe Jody Carver or some other guru knows ?
Here's a video of a TV show broadcast at the time Sleep Walk was a hit, it's plainly a three neck Custom AND he's using three finger picks, see 1:43 on the video

Over here ? Nah ! not even amongst steel players, if you ran a quiz as to what he played, I'm sure over 50% couldn't tell you. In fact I'll do that this Sunday at the steelies meeting in Cambridge..

That's a good question! I assumed it was a Stringmaster because of the album cover, but the video shows a Custom. I would think the album cover would be representative of what he used in the studio and that picture would probably have been taken close to the recording date. The live performance was probably after the song hit #1 on the pop charts. Just a guess... I really don't know.
As far as the lyrics, Ann's name appears on the copyright along with Santo and Johnny, but it says nothing about lyrics. I found two sources that attribute the "added lyrics" to Don Wolf. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel
