Played a gig last night at a BBQ hosted by coach Tom Coughlin for NY Giants players, families and friends. This football is chocolate and thankfully it was an exceptionally chilly night here in AZ so there was no melting.

Well yeah...the bass player had already eaten the end off where my left hand is. And I actually had hopes of bringing this thing home intact...there was less than a Hershey's kiss worth of chocolate by that time...bummer.

I don't get it. When does something happen? Eight and a half minutes took half an hour! Thought I'd check it out again as a Greenock-born boy(Tynes), was playing. It's obviously a huge sport Stateside and they are trying again to promote interest over here, but it's just way too slow for me. And what's with all the padding and helmets? Shower of nancy boys. Laughing
Try rugby for roughness and football(Association) for skill and acting ability.
Gotta' go. Tom Petty has just come on.

Awwrabest,
Arch.

Hear, hear, Archie!!!

I was just forced to sit through it. My wife unwittingly accepted an invitation to a party tonight without having the faintest idea of what the date signified.

I hope someone is happy tonight, because I was nodding off half way through the 'game' - who won, anyway?

"...shower of nancy boys..."

I love it, Archie - JUST what I was thinking. Clearly Greenock, Scotland and Muswell Hill, North London share some of the same vernacular....

That'll be the last game of football I ever sit through!

Oh, yeah, soccer is so much more thrilling, where a score of 2 to 1 is considered high...yawn. And rugby, what a joke. Bunch of guys huddled together showing their butts to the fans and grunting around in the same spot of ground for hours over a watermelon sized ball...snore. The Americans took rugby and played it so ferociously they had to introduce padding to keep people from getting killed, literally. Then they shrunk the ball to throwable size, and with the forward pass opened up the whole field for fireworks.

Sorry you guys didn't know enough about the game to appreciate it. This was one of the best Super Bowls in history. The New England Patriots were trying to be the first pro team ever to have a perfect season with no losses. But the New York Giants, who were heavy underdogs, played beyond themselves and came from behind to beat the Patriots in the last seconds of the game. A game that close is very rare in the Super Bowl. Plus, the Pats quarterback is apparently a cruel heartthrob who dumped his girlfriend when she was 5 months pregnant to take up with a top Victoria's Secret model who graces bathroom magazine racks all over the world. I didn't know all that myself, but my fiancee was jumping for joy everytime he got slammed to the ground. You guys just didn't know where to look for the dramma. Rolling Eyes

T's son is a drama director at a local church and we simply could not miss his performance so I recorded the 2nd half of the game while we were gone. Just finished watching the playback...gotta admit that I was surprised. I've not really been into football in the last few years (I'm diggin' b'ball right now...GO SUNS!), but I think it's cool the underdog came out on top. No matter what, it was a good and close game as opposed to many of the Super Bowl blowouts and it just felt like good entertainment.

Congrats NY (Patriot's...still an amazing season)

Did anyone else catch the Terry Bradshaw blooper at the end of the pre-game show? : ) (when Howie Long was putting on his Red Sox hat)

Actually, David, I feel the same way about soccer, but that's beside the point. If that was one of the best games in the history of the Super Bowl, then I'm relieved that I missed all the others!

I'm kidding!!!! I'm passionate about some pretty strange things myself, so I'm more than capable of allowing that I could be missing something.

And - I now know that Mike uses four picks!!!(Or is that only for holding chocolate footballs, Mike?)

Very Happy

This is truly the only football stat I know, as I haven't followed sports at all since I was a kid, but the Miami Dolphin team had a perfect season in '72. The Pats would've been the second.

Now, back to the shirling!

Now Patrick, why did you have to go and mention that? I'm a Redskins (and Bengals) fan and probably one of the few around here who know who lost that SB to the Dolphins. Mad

NE would have been the first to go 19-0, as the season was only 17 games back in 1972.

Let's not overlook the fact that the Giants head coach has the good sense to book a band with a great pedal steel player. Bravo!

Cricket! Now there's a boring sport. Can last five days and still finish in a draw. Neither of us live in a land where they get excited about cricket. Roger used to. If you like your sport to be exciting, check this:

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Dolphins in '72. I was a hippie back then, and wasn't paying much attention to sports, and don't remember some things from those years. See the currently running hippie thread for why. Winking

I am not a big football fan, like drag racing much more, but living in New Jersey, the NEW JERSEY GIANTS were fun to watch last night what an amzing finish and for all the crap that Coach Coughlin and Eli Manning got all season, they really deserve the trophy.

There was a great human interest story playing out toward the end of the season where one of the coaches brought an old team mate of his to give a speech to the giants. He was a career army man that had both his legs amputated this year after his Humvee was blown up in Iraq.
He didn't know what to say but relayed how his buds had taken care of him and saved his life, and told the team that they should do the same for each other. After his speech the season really turned around and the rest is real magic

A few weeks ago he showed up at the hotel walking with the help of some crutches. After the win over the Packers they gave him the game winning ball which may be Farve's last pass.

It's nice to see Coughlin have steel at the party, hope you had a good time
Miguel, Eli is a real country boy, hope he enjoyed your playing. A real honor.

By the way, my daughter is classmates with the Giants former QB Dave Brown's daughter and is also a childhood buddy and highschool teammate with my little brother.

Go Giants 18-1

I remember watching a special on "mothing" on BBC1 a couple of years back.....thrilling night in Ashford.

Well, okay, Crowbear, I was just funnin' to get back at the Europhiles for knockin' Amurcun football. I really know almost nothing about rugby, except that football derived from it long ago. And watching my kids learn soccer, I have come to appreciate that it places more value on skill and finesse, and less on brute force.

I have a soft spot for the Mannings, because Archie is from Drew, Mississippi, where I started elementary school and first started playing sandlot football. Watching a Manning play Favre in the Colts-Packers game was like watching a North Mississippi versus South Mississippi game. Smile
