The second most controversial subject among steel guitar players (after tunings) seems to be blocking. When I first began playing at the age of 27, I played acoustic. I originally learned to lift the steel off the strings and block with the trailing fingers. I'm told that this is also the prefferred way of blocking by hawaiian players.
But other players prefer palm blocking, which I have found that I use some when I'm playing alot of chords. And others like pick blocking which I only rarely use.
I have recently returned to playing almost exclusively on acoustic instruments so it may not really be an issue for me. But is there anything to blocking other than personal preference? I can't see any. |

yes,
In my opinion pick blocking is necessary for fast runs. If you want to cultivate speed, I believe that pick blocking is the way to go. |

Thanks. Since I've got no more discussion than that, I guess I should assume that this is not so much controversial as that there is just alot to say about it. |
