I have a George L E66 PU apparently for a 10 string pedal steel. Its fully encapsulated so I don't no if it has pole pieces or a blade inside and how important string spacing will be if I build a lap steel to suit it. I can bear to make an eight string with pedal steel spacing but would prefer to match my six sting dobro spacing. Anyone any experience?

If you will take a razor blade or some other thin piece of ferric metal you can move the piece right on the top of the pickup and you will feel the pull of either pole pieces with a little less pull between them or a continuous pull all the way across the top indicating a bar type set up. I used this method anytime I need to know the set up of a pickup that has a solid cover on it.

The George L E66 has blades rather than pole pieces.

I understand pickups with pole pieces but I draw a blank on blades. Would someone enlighten me?

Blades are a continuous bar or thin bars of metal that go all the way across the top of the bobbin.
