I wanted to post the second I read it as well. Bobbe nailed this one. It is either in the guitar or it is not. Professional hands can make guitars sound good, they're professionals, but the combination of professional hands and a great sounding guitar gives you chills, maybe a tear or two as well.

I have been saying this for a long time as well. My test is this, try 5 different guitars and see which one you sound good on, even better yet, let your friend try it and you sit and listen. Same player, same everything, just different guitars, let the guitar do the talking. If you listen hard enough it will tell you what to buy.

Amen Bobbe, Love it.

[quote="Mike Mantey"] It is either in the guitar or it is not.

So true Mike, I tried an Emmons PP, it sounded like an Emmons PP, I still sounded like my usual stumbling/fumbling self, but with a great tone. LOL

I look at it a lot like cars. You have your basic compact and your luxury and so on. You can have this compact car, make all kinds of improvments. You can add a turbo charger to your little four cylinder (like adding a new pickup) You can change the performance of the car a bit. Like in a guitar, the pickup can change the way the guitar sounds. Changing the pickup has to have effect on the sound, the different pickups are totally different inside, so I know they don't have the same sound.
You can then change the heads or the cam or somthing and get some more horsepower, super wires, and distributor, whatever, like getting the MPX1 effects processor, cables, best amps, best volume pedal, and so on. This makes it a little better at this point. Still only helped you out a little bit in the long run. All it took was several thousands of Dollars. The best thing you probably got out of the deal is a whole lot of practice
This is my anology, the point is you can get the compact and do all this to imitate the luxury, or you can get the luxury! A good guitar only needs an amp and a player.

If it aint there, your not going to get it. A professional player can portray a great tone out of many guitars out there, because they are professional and they are good. They are still just the tool. If the instrument does not have the capability of a good tone, even a pro won't get it. I am not even sure if there are any guitars out there any more that are not capable of a decent tone, but some are better than others.

Sorry to ramble, you can tell I am a cadillac type guy.

Who would know better about this topic than Bobbe? He's bought, sold, demo-ed, heard, seen and worked on just about every brand out there. He knows what's up here. I really trust his judgement on this one, and agree with him 100%.

Thanks Bobbe I have suspected the instrument was a very critical part of good tone.
One time early on in my steel playing career a prominant steeler let me grab a couple of chords on his rig at the county fair.
I really Knew from then on tone was not entirely in one's hands! Cool

I fully agree with BOBBE on this no 2 guitars are the same not even the same brand is the same TONE WISE thats why i have MODIFIED so many of them and have done as many as 3 guitars for 1 customer of the same brand and none of them sound the same, before nor after, and he will tell you he would not play one in public that i didn't modify for him first, thanks
