I've been re-discovering David Lindley's superb playing on the Jackson Browne live album, Running On Empty. In one of the photos in the accompanying booklet he is sitting at an 8-string console. I've read on the forum that he often uses an open E tuning, but I wondered if this would apply to an 8-string.
Any ideas?

E's the key I've recall more than any other from reading any interview I could ever find about MR, Dave. _________________ If you worry more about the tools your building with than what your building, you'll never get anything Built

I've never seen him play an eight string steel guitar live, so I can't do anything but guess at a tuning. Have you tried contacting Mr. Dave directly? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

In Andy Volk's interview in his book (Lap Steel Guitar) with Mr,Dave he said He stopped playing the pedal steel, because that's all he would do and he wouldn't play any of the other instruments he really liked playing. _________________ If you worry more about the tools your building with than what your building, you'll never get anything Built

Do you mean the wideangle hotel room shot ? That looks like a single neck 10-string pedal steel to me. That is what I always thought, anyway... _________________ Olli Haavisto

Yep, I checked. It`s a pedal steel, you can see part of the pedal bar. _________________ Olli Haavisto

I think he played pedal steel (not only lap steel) on the Trio record by Parton, Ronstadt, Harris. |

On the two Trio albums pedal steel is featured on only two songs, The Pain of Loving You played by Steve Fishell and The Blue Train by Ben Keith.
According to the liner notes.
Lindley plays Kona Hawaiian, mandolin, guitar, autoharp.... _________________ Olli Haavisto

My mistake. I don't have the album to hand, so I was relying on my very imperfect memory.
I didn't realise he ever played pedal steel. I will have to explore some of the recordings mentioned above. I can't imagine he would have a conventional approach to that either.
Thanks for all the information.
Chris

I've listened that album to death. I'm a big fan. I've had to replace it a few times for wearing it out. There is no pedal action on there that I can hear. Maybe it was just a photo opp? _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare
