man;...just lately, i thought about broadway mae and that time frame on lower broadway when the music was real and so were the guy's and gal's that made that scene. everybody had a story and everybody would listen to it, at least once.
many a night ol' mae made her mark as she made her rounds and closed 'em down with the best of what she had, just to do it all over again when the sun goes down tommorrow. what a life, but she loved it.
somewhere i still have the 45 rpm that i can't remember who produced on her, for kixx. the buck i gave her for it was like worth a million and i still remember that ol' snagley grin.and then, the yodel.
merchants ain't quite the same, but then, neither is lower broad.
and walter haynes is playin' the hotel preston next week! imsgine............
ya'll have a happy new year, now, ya' heah'.

Broadway Mae is no longer with us fellas. John Shepherd brought her down to the street a few years ago to see everybody she could still remember. She'd been in a nursing home for several years and then he told me she'd passed on. The street has changed so much there's hardly anybody down there now that was there just ten years ago when I was a bar owner and picker down there. The clubs are a lot nicer and it's the busiest I ever saw. The change is really for the best and there's more steel players down there now than I ever saw before. I could play down there for months and nobody would come by to sit in and now they're all over the place. Just think a short month ago John Hughey was a regular down there! The change has been good to Broad Street.

Sorry to hear about Mae.

I think she liked the attention she got, even if she was laughed at. A lot of people got entertained by her and one time during convention week, thanks to the help of Don Maddox and His wife Connie at Deemans Den, got her all dressed up in an evening gown and took her to Printers Alley in A Limo to put on a show in the Western Room. Only nobody told the management or band! When they were asked "What they were doing?", The Bass Player told them "about 30 minutes, get your a**es down from there!". The DJ's were rolling on the floor, cracking up, but I imagine that they talked about Mae on the radio all over the country. I guess she did become a "Star" in some way! There was a low life that did become a star later on and he was hanging around Mae before he "made" it and bumming money off her and a couple of the guys in the band took him out behind Merchants in the Alley and did an attitude adjustment on him.

Some interesting times back then and they had to get better. The Union (Local 257) needs to get off their A** and keep those guys (pickers) from woking for less than scale. They haven't ever cared what happens on lower broad, and probably never will, given the current group they have in there now. Ain't nothing new about a club owner screwing pickers, always has and always will.

Down off my Soapbox now
John

Just when I thought that old dawg had went away, here she comes, barking louder than ever. Thanks, John for the memories. That was some good times. I remember the day the Merchants put up new drywall, Harley came in a cried because he had pills hidden in the walls and now they were covered up.

Bill Stepp is still around Nashville, I've been told.Guy knew more songs off the top of his head than anybody I ever saw. He started singing songs Faron had recorded one night and went thru every one Faron had recorded, Then He called Faron up to sit in. Faron said "Hell, I don't know some of those sob's myself. It Was another rare Faron Moment.

OMG...haven't even seen pics of Don or Harley in decades. Who is the drag queen impersonating Mae? Geeezzzz...D Den...and to think it's a 5-star restaurant now with valet parking.

Cookie, it was always funny to me that where the Den was located is where a drug store once was. If you look at the building to this day there is still a popout on the exterior up around the 2nd floor level..."DRUGS". How appropriate that was back in the day huh? : )

I talked to Don a few times not long before he passed but does anyone know where Harley Alsup is?
