I set up my Legrand II today and it sounds like a distortion unit is hooked up..but it's not. I think I've isolated it to the steel, but not positive. I'm not a super electonics expert so any advice??? Idea

Charles,

I do a lot of troubleshooting. I would recommend doing this:

Change out the volume pedal

Distortion still present?

If yes change out the amp.

Distortion still present?

If so its isolated to the guitar. If so change the pickup and see what you get. If you do not have a second amp or pedal then you might be able to use a different guitar with a similar pickup.

Let us know what you find.

also and or..
remove the volume pedal..

try the amp with another guitar or a MIC...

Is it an older Peavey amp ?

They can easily cause distortion just from dirty contacts.

You need to Isolate the Steel from the amp, remove as much as possible to get it down to the most basic, Guitar, cable, amp.

try this..

Guitar , cable, recorder, headphones

Mic, cable, Amp etc...

May be something as simple as a bad cable,Get a cable you KNOW is good, plug in just the guitar into an amp you KNOW is good,if still distorting, then it proberly is in the guitar, could be something as simple as a bad input jack,or a bad ground.DYKBC.

Well, It looks like the volume pedal. It's a Hilton electronic and I didn't expect that. From the Guitar to the amp direct is OK. ???
