I've also seen guys tune string 6 up to C#.
That gives you the A7th chord on the last four strings.

On a 22.5" scale guitar go with:
E .015
C .018
A .022
G .024w
E .030w
C .036w
Scotty sells these gauges as a C6th six string set. I use a .034w on the last string because I tune that note to C#.

I'm not Brad Bechtel and not even related, but; my gauges would be:
E – .015p
C – .018p
A – .022p
G – .024w/.-26w
E – .030w/.032w
C/C# – .036w/.038w
for a C6th/A7th tuning on a (6)-string.

I like a wound .022 on the A string because I can get more tone out of it and it also lessens the deadness in the upper positions. I feel the added string noise is neglegible.
On the other hand, I think a plain .022 has a sound all its own and is essential if one is attempting to emulate say, Jerry Byrd, who used it. |
