Hey Forumites. I learned to play with and still only use metal picks on my thumb and fingers (Dunlop metal thumb and Kyser finger picks). I would like to know the differences tone wise between plastic and metal picks if there are any? Whats your favorite and why?
Also, why do most players i see use plastic thumbpicks and metal fingerpicks? |

Hi Chris
I've always used a metal thumb pick, though it's been very slightly spoon shaped at the business end.
I've always thought it brighter and I can get it to sit on my thumb better than I ever could the plastic ones.
Each to his own.
Cheers

From my experience,a metal thumb pick causes much more string noise on the wound strings.I don't know if Zookie makes a metal thumb pick, but I bet it would cure a lot of that noise.

I have to disagree (lest another "myth" get started ). Thick, rounded, blunt picks made of plastic or celluloid sound pretty much identical to those old tortoise-shell picks. |

I have recently tried both. for some reason I went back to plastic. Do they make em in mother of pearl engraced in gold (real) where I can get my initials _________________ "Oh what a tangled web we weave when we first begin to deceive" Someone Famous |

Before playing steel I used all metal finger picks, including thumb, for guitar and Dobro. When I started playing lap and pedal steel, I was still switching over to Dobro a lot. So I just kept on using all metal picks. Now I play mostly pedal steel, but see no reason to start using a plastic thumb pick. If a metal thumb pick causes too much pick noise, it is just poor technique with the pick angle, and/or not having the pick properly rounded on the edges. For me it matches the other picks better, and stays on my thumb better. But I can't say I've ever listened to someone using a plastic thumb pick and heard anything wrong. I think it's what you get use to. |

I agree w/ David.
I started out using a plastic thumb pick, but I could never get them to fit just right- warm water didn't work, etc. My steel teacher suggested a metal one, and problem solved. The Dunlop metal picks I use have fully rounded, folded back sides to prevent noise.
