My guess is that the consensus would be:
The original Ray Price version from '66 where Emmons created the part (on the "Touch my Heart" album, and a single from then...).
Then the Emmons instrumental version live in St Louis from '77.
Not to slight other fine versions, but that's where it started.
I believe both are available on CD.
No links or MP3s to put up though, sorry... |

| I can't recall the exact year but in the mid 70's at the Western Place on Skillman Av in Dallas. It was one of the first steel shows in Dallas. Buddy Emmons, Maurice Anderson, Julian Thorp, and Curly Chalker. Excellent band fronted by the late Jess Hudson. One of the songs that Buddy played that night was A Way To Survive. I have never heard it played any better than that night. Until a few years ago I had a copy of his performance. |

My word!!!...I was in the audience for this performance by Emmons. Back then I did not even own a steel guitar. My friend Tommy Dodd was involved in putting on this show. I always loved the steel and came to see Emmons. |

I recorded a version of this on Lap Steel. I stole as much of Emmons as I could. The tuning is the Leavitt tuning...low to high C# E G Bb C D Eb G. I only used one slant. This can be played on an 8 string lap. Check it out if you like. I posted this here since some of the pedal players might not frequent the no pedal section. The link is over there too.
