A couple of summers ago my wife and I spent a week at Nashcamp - a bluegrass music camp near Nashville. It was one of the best vacations we ever had. She was just starting out on the mandolin and got a week's worth of instruction from the great Roland White. I took Dobro classes with an amazing young player named Mike Witcher, and it was great experience for both of us.

For the past 2-1/2 years I have been focused on (obsessed with) learning pedal steel, and I am wondering if there are any music camps out there that offer pedal steel? I have looked around a bit, but so far have not found anything.

Steve, where in Wis? I am from Oconomowoc. I would love the same program!! I wonder if Bobby Flores school in Texas might be a place. He is associated with some fabulous players like Randy Reinhard, Dicky Overby and Jim Loessberg to name a few, plus he is a great steel player. Just a wild thought, but I like your thinking. Jim

I bought Jeff's "Up From the Top - A&B Pedal" DVD/CD a couple of months ago and I feel like it has really helped me a lot. I wish he was still around, I'd love to have had the opportunity to sit down with him. He was able to communicate in a way that makes sense to me. Not all instructional materials I have seen have been as helpful as his.

There was a steel camp at Port Townsend in Washington last July. Seems I heard they were gonna do it again. Bobby Black and lots of other greats were on it.

I think Jody Cameron is doing a deal kind of like what you are talking about.
Click the link for his web site.

I don't know if I did this correctly, if not copy and paste the address to get to it.

Who knew there were so many steel players up this way.

Perhaps the Dairyland Steel Show does or would do a workshop if there were enough players interested? I haven't been to it but I was thinking about going this year.

On an unrelated note do any of you gig around the Madison area or know of any players that do? I'm always up for seeing pedal steel players live but I haven't had much luck finding any players around Dane county.

Sean, There are some very fine players currently gigging around Madison - a few that come to mind are Rick Nass with the Dang-its, Ed Larson with Pupy Costello, and Tom Dehlinger with Chris Plata.

Thanks to everyone for all of the workshop tips, I will follow up on them. It looks like I may have a hard time finding the kind of camp I am looking for, though. Nashcamp appealed to us because there were a variety of instrument and vocal workshops going on (including mandolin and vocals for my wife), and band workshops where we had a chance to apply what we were learning in the classes. Like I said, it was one of the best vacations we ever had.
