Here's a Dobro tuning I've been fooling with lately, not sure if it's a standard one; I don't remember seeing it before, so here it is. It tunes quick from a standard tuning/setup. I hope the low A is not too tight.

While playing out of standard dobro G tuning I sometimes drop just the middle G to F# for a quick and dirty D6th.
I do know a player who tunes his Asher lap in the same increments as you but in E,

That's the E6 that I use, and it works great for me, although I could probably use another string or two. The 6 gives you low minors, and you can slide down two frets for a 7th (or even an 11th if you hit more strings) chord to lead into the IV chord.
A standard A string (.042-.044) is not too tight for a B or A. The E6 tension is about the same as for bluegrass G, and the D would be lower. _________________ No-name lap steel and Beard Gold Tone reso in E6 and E7 |

I believe Dean was referring to tuning the 6th string up to A. Typically, the 6th string in reso G is a .056, which might be a wee-bit tight up a whole step from G.
Definitely not for a guitar with a round neck and extension nut!!! Fortunately, you don't see a whole lot of those around anymore, except for those guys still playing pre-war Dobros 'grass style.

I've got a couple Beard Gold Tones, which are my "working" guitars. One is in straight G, the other I keep, alternately, in either G6 or C6. Those being, high to low
Tab: |
D .016 E .015
B .018 C .018
G .026w A .022w
E .032 G .026
D .036 E .032
B .046 C .042 |
I like the "3rd in the bass" voicings on the G6 tuning. I miss the low root tone only occasionally.
The C6 tuning really needs a wound third to properly excite the resonator, at least on my guitars. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Here`s a G6th tuning I sometimes use on weissenborn:

I have the weiss in the low bass G normally, so I just tune the low D up to E. _________________ Olli Haavisto

I think the .042 for the sixth string, as mentioned by Gary and Herb, would be the ticket.
I would wear safety glasses in trying to tune a .056 from a standard dobro set up to A!
What I have found in tuning the dobro from a standard dobro set designed for G, is that if you put extra tension on lower strings in tuning it higher, when new, they might be able to take it, but if they have been on the guitar for any length of time - it can be risky business. _________________ Mark |
