Bill,

I heard Julian play this song live in Panama City Florida back 1981. It was one of the nicest things I ever heard played on steel guitar. He had a 14 string BMI that Zane Beck and Don Fritsche had custom built for him. He had a homemade amp configuration he was pickin' through.

I later asked Zane about this when I went to his house in Littlerock, AR and had him build me a steel like Julian's. Zane told me that he had rigged that amp configuration up for Julian.

It had, I believe one speaker cabinent with an 18 inch speaker and another cabinent with either two twelves or two tens rigged up in it. Julian had it set up on this tiny bandstand in a T configuration. It was awesome and his sound that night changed my style of steel playing forever. He was tops!

Thanks for posting!!

Never heard Julian play country before. Especially not a country ballad. This is great!

I met Julian when he worked with Barbra Mandrell, He could play E9 country with the best of them, but when he played his stuff ...well.
He lived in Augusta Ga for a while, I even played on a show with him. Glad he followed us, don't think I could have followed him.

Julian THarpe could play anything you would want to hear on steel guitar and then some.

He was a real MASTER MUSICIAN, MASTER STEEL GUITARIST.

He could play a country ballad have you all emotional then turn around play a jazz or pop tune, then a Disco song or a beautiful Gospel song.

Listen to his cut/recording of the contemporary Gospel Dallas Holms song "I'll Rise Again," or his beautiful rendition of "Amazing Grace," and you'll hear and even other side of his talent/artistry.

Donna Hammitt years ago at scotty's convention, did a version of julians "Rise Again". She played it in julians style, and she did it justice to.

Terry,
Donna went on and played several years for Bill Anderson. She is now a mother and in the medical field. I spoke with her a few minutes in the Peavey room at ISGC this year in St Louis. She was in there when Mike Johnson was signing autographs and visiting with people. By the way Mike preceded Donna with Bill.
