My latest experiment with a new Lap Steel Tuning is
really proving interesting and I think it is one with
great potential.
I have extended the 6 string C6th in a somewhat
different way by adding chromatic strings on the top
where they are out of the way and can be called upon
when needed. See the pic below for the set up.
It is the same concept used by Pedal Steel players
on the E9th tuning. Except what I am talking about here uses no pedals of course while keeping the 6 string C6 tuning in tact but adding two chromatic
string on top.
If you want to try this you need an 8 string steel.

I have the tab for this original peice and can
do a lesson for any interested.

Roy, have you tried flatting the B? That would give you a combination C6 and Leavitt. Then if you just sharp the C like Jerry Byrd......
I tried this unsuccessfully. But I've heard your postings of Leavitt tuning. I think that if it can be done, you'd have an easier time of it than me by far. I did think that the Bb and D were too far removed from the other Leavitt strings. I considered putting them on the bottom a la Joaquin Murphey's C6 and Herb Remington's F13. But I haven't tried it yet.

Roy,

That is a really neat idea. When I first started messing with pedal steel, those "out of order" strings seemed crazy to me, but I soon came to really like them that way. Why didn't I think of this for lap steel?

Now I think I'll "map out" your tuning to visualize scale and chord options in my mind. After wrapping my mind around it, I may also try with the Bb to compare. Fun exercises.

Oh and your tune is great. I'll probably be rolling my tone knob back a little for clean playing after hearing that.

Edward,
Your suggestions would surely work. My problem
would be that I am so used to the Leavitt "as is"
per Mike Ihde that I would have to get used to
all those new "grips" some of which would be
difficult. Question
Kurt,
Thank you and good luck. Smile
The Bb would replace the Major 7th with the dominent.
A finger pull would raise to the Maj7 when needed.
If that won't work than of course we can add pedals
and knee levers and start the wild process all over
again. Very Happy

Well, Roy, given what you said in your last post, maybe you should, Leavitt as it is. Laughing

I have the same thing using E6. I have a 10 string E6 with the 2 chromatic strings on top. It works really well. Smile

I like that Roy. Nice ending too.

I have plans for some chromatics added to the Leavitt tuning. I hope to get around to it someday....add that to the list!!

Hi, Roy.

First, I've enjoyed your contributions to the Forum tremendously.

On the two chromatic strings added to the C6 tuning I seem to recall bOb stating that Bobby Black did this several years ago at some steel show where he was playing in California. bOb also thought it was a great idea, if my memory serves me correctly.

Just my 2 cents...his name was Bill Leavitt, which rhymes with bev as in beverly hills, so it's lev-it as in levi-tate.
