Howdy folks,
I have just figured out how to make a myspace page, and have uploaded an arrangement of "Greensleeves".
I know Mr Auldridge recorded a version years ago, though I have never heard it. I am sure it is a lot more polished than my version!!
I am playing my DeGruchy resonator guitar that you can see in my avatar, and a Baby Taylor for the guitar melody. It was originally recorded by me in my in-laws (out-laws) soon to be demolished house, using a little Fostex digital 8 track, and a cheap condensor mic. My good friend Lindsay Horner cleaned up my sketchy recording in his studio, and added a beautiful yet subtle fingerpicked accompaniment and bass line.
I will be finished recording a few more tunes next week, and will finally have a CD to sell at gigs, performing on the street etc. I will post some more tunes when I can.
Any feedback (positive/negative/constructive?) would be greatly appreciated, also, how do I contact other myspace people to become "friends"? I am feeling a bit lonely at the moment!
The link to my myspace page is

(if this doesn't work can someone tell me how to do it please? Sorry - I really am new to this!)
Thanks for listening,

I liked the tune. I don't know anything about myspace and your page looked pretty good to me. Musically speaking the only thing I thought might up the ante a bit would be a little Sam Ku West style vibrato in places and that's about it. Let us know when you add some more tunes! It looks and sounds great to me. _________________ Tribo-Tone™ Bars |

Dean, that is rather easy on the ear and is very pleasant music, besides, I am terribly envious. Well done, and I hope to hear lot's more of your obvious talent
I have yet to buy my first steel instrument,(delaying the inevitable, because I am not sure what to buy frankly) Then I will need instruction. It will be a long time, before I would be game enough to put something up here amongst these experts.

Very nice job. I notice you have a pickup on your resonator, what is it? Did you record with it?
The recording sounds very professional, you obviously used a mic, but did you mix in the direct siginal?
thanks

Hi guys, thanks for the kind words. It's great to be able to share my music with people from around the other side of the world!
It's funny, but acoustic and dobro (open G tuning) was my entire focus until just recently... and then I got my 8 string Fender Deluxe! Honestly, the possibilities that open up with the 6th tuning are making my head spin!
So while I am really glad to finally record these dobro tunes, and share them here with you nice folks, I am already thinking of my next "steel" project!
Eric - thanks for your suggestion regarding vibrato - I agree, and it is one area that I keep thinking about, experimenting with various rates and intensities. It really is a lifelong pursuit to develop our own sound isn't it....
Maurie - just get started on whatever you can - my first "steel" was the Baby Taylor guitar you heard on Greensleeves, just with an extension nut to raise the action. You can get them from many music stores online, not too sure where in NSW, otherwise email me and I will send you one.
Bill - thank you so much, although I think you are too kind!
Dom - thats a Lace Sensor Pickup on my guitar, and no, I didn't use it in this recording. If I had more time to experiment with the recording I would have liked to. I mainly use the pickup for live performance, and even then I prefer to blend it with a microphone. I have done gigs using straight pickup only, and it worked fine.
Thanks again for listening,
Have a safe Christmas. _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |

Well, you could start by accepting the friend requests you get, like the one I sent yesterday...
Nice recording, I liked it a lot!

Dean,
It sounded very nice and moody. My only comment would be that the first time through the melody, you should make sure it's correct. Later on in the tune you can paraphrase and do what you want but the statement of the melody should be pretty close to the actual melody we all know. I wondered as I listened, "Did he really ever hear the actual melody or is this from what he thinks the melody is supposed to be" |

Dean,
I was thinking the same thing as Mike. I did not recognize the melody line.
But it was sweet playing.
Aloha no and Merry Christmas,

Hey thanks everyone for listening and offering feedback, it means a lot to me, especially your honesty!
Sorry Steinar for my tardy reply - Between work and different time zones I got there in the end!
Tom, Fred, Steve and Bill, thanks very much.
(Hey Fred - what kind/brand of dobro are you getting? I know you will enjoy this type of guitar).
Mike Ihde and Don Kona Woods, I appreciate your suggestion, and on reflection, I realise that I did not play the melody accurately.
I think I was aware that I had taken some liberties with the tune when I first started experimenting with it, but over time I got so used to "my" way of doing it that it seemed acceptable to my ear.
I agree that a recognisable and true statement of a melody is desirable the first time through before you start playing variations.
I am going back in the studio to re-record the somewhat stilted ending, maybe I will rethink the start also!
This really is food for thought...
Thank you,
