Secunia has recently been popping up in the lower left corner of my screen warning of "insecure programs" on my system. Among the ones listed were a couple of old updates of Java. I went to Add or Remove and removed them, and also removed Java 6, Update 14 (which appears to be the current Update) then restarted the computer, went to java.com and re-downloaded Java 6, Update 14.

Just now when I returned to my computer after some hours of idling with no programs open, I found it displaying a message simply marked "Error" that said:

"No JVM could be found on your system.
Please define EXE4J_JAVA_HOME to point to an installed JDK or JRE or download a JRE from www.java.com."

I checked my Add or Remove list and Java 6, Update 14 is there.

I need someone to translate that Error message for me. I know that JRE=Java Runtime Environment and JVM=Java Virtual Machine. I appear to have already downloaded a JRE. So what does that other instruction mean?

Further symptom: When I go to java.com in Firefox, when I click any link in the homepage (e.g. "Help" or "Do I Have Java?"), the program hangs ("not responding"). In Internet Explorer everything in the java.com site works, including verifying that Java "is working correctly" on my system.

Brint, there must be a program on your computer running in the background that uses Java.

For our purposes here the JRE and the JVM are pretty much the same thing. We call it the JRE, programs call it the JVM. You don't want the whole JDK (development kit), it's much larger and only necessary if you're a software developer.

I just noticed that Wiz said in another thread that Secunia uses Java. That's probably what's giving you the error message. I'd try these things if the problem persists:

1. Update Secunia itself. It might just not be new enough to "know" about Java 6 update 14.
2. Uninstall and reinstall Java, then run Secunia.

Of course, it might be another program entirely...I suppose I would track down what program is giving you the error by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc and closing processes until you hit the right one (there's more elegant ways of doing it, of course, but that'll do)

But I doubt you'll need to get into it that deep.

Do you use Spark by any chance? It's an IM client...when I google EXE4J_JAVA_HOME I see people talking about Spark... also "Poker Academy" and "Magelo". It could be any program that uses Java, really. But I'd say just reinstall Java (uninstalling first and re-downloading the installer) and hope the problem corrects itself. If it doesn't then you have to figure out what program throws the error. Or just wait for Java update 15...maybe you're not alone and they're working on a fix already.

That said, I just prepared some workstations and updated them all to 14 and they seem to be fine.

Sorry if there's not a whole lot useful here...the error message itself is pretty vague, and without knowing the program that throws it then we don't have a lot to go on.
