Wiz,
Secunia tells me that I need to download a patch for my powerpoint 2003. I go to the site and download it. Then, when I click on the patch to install it, the installation thingy tells me I don't need it on this machine and refuses to install.
What can I do? _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

If it won't install and/or it tells you it's not needed for your installation then Secunia would appear to be in error or the problem.
I did the on-line Secunia scan it tells me that Firefox is "insecure". I have the latest version of FF3. Sounds like Secunia is the problem. |

Jack;
Firefox was just updated Thursday night, to version 3.0.11, to fix 9 security vulnerabilities and database corruption issues. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Wiz, I download the patch from windows update, no problem. It is when I click on it to install that i get the message that I don't need it and it refuses to install.
That don't look like a FF or Secunia problem to me.
Of course I could be wrong... _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

I'm convinced Secunia, at least the on-line scan version, is the problem. Yesterday, it kept telling me that FF3 was not updated and it was. Then later I got an update to Java, installed that and restarted the PC. I ran the Secunia on-line again and it told me Java was out of date. This morning I went to the Java web site and downloaded the latest version and installed it, restarted the PC and ran Secunia on-line again and it's still telling me Java is not up to date. |

Ok then Jack, how do I get my computer to update Powerpoint. I downloaded the update, I click on the exe to install it...at this point my computer tells me I don't need it. So I guess maybe what you are saying is that Secunia tells me I need it when in fact I don't? _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Personally, I would ignore the notice that PP is missing an update. I never used Secunia before and with the problems I ran across checking it out, I would say I won't use it again. |

Maybe something has gone wrong with your PowerPoint application. Does it open and function normally? Maybe you haven't updated your gdiplus.dll, as required to secure PowerPoint and other apps using that display file. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Wiz, yes it opens and functions normally. At least I think so. I only use it when someone sends me a PP presentation.
This gdiplus.dll...Is it currently in the PP program folder? If so, might I find the new one, download it and replace the old with the new? _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Unfortunately Bent, GDI+ is not just part of PowerPoint but is used all over the place so it is a main component of Windows. I might be wrong on this but I believe that the last GDI+ issue was five years ago and if you have at least Service Pack 1 for XP then that's not your issue.
It honestly just sounds like Secunia has a false positive in that it thinks you need the patch when you don't. This isn't a big deal and I'd be surprised if there wasn't a way in Secunia to tell it to ignore a certain update or stop warning about it. _________________ MSA Semi-Classic S10 w/ 4P+4L and some shiny new tuners |

John yo might be on to something there. I just wish I could be sure before i direct secunia to ignore it.
It is too bad if what Jack said about Secunia is accurate. I always relied on it.
What is your take on the security and accuracy on Secunia Wiz? (other than the odd senior moment) _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

I'm having my doubts about Secunia. I've been hassling with Java for a while now because Secunia said a couple of older Java versions, among other programs, were Level 4 Insecure. I removed the older versions, via Secunia's own "Direct Download" links, removed the latest Java version, re-booted, went to java.com and installed the latest version. My Add or Remove list still showed the older versions, so I removed them via there, once again removed the current version, once again re-booted and installed the current Java version, and as of yesterday Secunia no longer showed any Java versions on the insecure list. Now Secunia once again shows two older Java versions on the Insecure list. I'm tired of playing Whack-a-Mole!
Secunia says my installation of Rhapsody is Insecure, and "strongly recommends" that I download the latest update from the vendor (there's no "Direct" link)--Rhapsody says I have the latest version. |

Well I don't have direct experience with Secunia but I can tell you that nothing of that nature is perfect.
The approach itself is flawed...rather than make a list of the (few) programs that we approve of the computer running, we (or Secunia, or our anti-virus, etc) make a list of the (thousands) of bad ones and try to prevent them from running.
Like if someone asked who was in your family and you instead gave them a list of everyone in your town, without your family, and said "they're the 3 people not on the list"
The other day AVG said one of our desktops at work had a bunch of viruses, but the "viruses" were actually old video drivers. _________________ MSA Semi-Classic S10 w/ 4P+4L and some shiny new tuners |
