Hello, does anybody here every switch between a Lap Steel and a Regular guitar during a song when performing? And if so, Do you use fingerpicks on the regular electric or what? I was thinking of having the Lap steel set up to do some soloing on during a few songs but am not sure what do do with the picks, I usually play Electric guitar with a Heavy Regular pick and Lap Steel with Plastic thumb and metal fingerpicks. What does Junior Brown do? |

I gave up finger picks because of this, wished I liked using a thumb pick on guitar. |

I did it for years. I used a flat pick and a metal finger pick on my middle finger for lead guitar, then just slipped on a metal pick on my first finger and a thumb pick when I went to steel. If you're playing lead on the two different guitars, you usually have time to change picks.

Hey Ted,
Its a personal choice with what is comfortable for you. I go from Tele to steel to Tele heaps thru the gig and I notice that there is a loss of volume, tone and clarity when playing steel without the picks. Some songs I have time to whack em on, others I play without picks. |

Yes Ted
I've been playing lap/pedal steel and electric guitar since 1960 doing just that.I find that I have to have the guitar strap set a little bit higher than if I was standing, but I change between the instruments during a song and find it no problem.
In Ireland it has become the accepted norm to play the two instruments that way (I started it and have been in the bad books of many a player in the show-band scene since)
Thumb and 3 finger-picks on both, no problem.

He uses a flat-pick between his thumb and index finger, and has metal picks on his middle and ring fingers. |

Yep... I started out doing it that way too, and for the same reason. I've been trying to retrain myself to use the traditional thumbpick/index/middle combo, but it's not been easy.
After having done it both ways, I think there are advantages to both ways of doing it, but I do believe the traditional way has a few more, IMO.
Sure do love Jr.'s playing, but man, is he LOUD when playing live!

I jump back and forth.
Iplay with a flatpick and a bare middle finger.
I dont detect any loss of tone or volume.
Ive got a mature callous on my middle finger from playing this way since forever.
note: I play lap steel and electric and acoustic guitar this way.
my pedal steel is all together different. |
