Ariel, I edited your message to include a link to the eBay auction. This guitar seems to have some significant holes in the lower bout. Those look like wood damage to me, but I could be wrong.
Weissenborns typically sell in the $2000 USD range on eBay, so the fact this one isn't up there means someone understands the potential problems this guitar may have.
Personally I would not spend that much money for a guitar in this condition, especially if I was overseas.
There are many good Weissenborn style makers in the world. Unless you have to have that Weissenborn mark in the sound hole, I'd look elsewhere. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Are you looking for 'collectable junk'? Or are you wanting a instrument to play?
Several years ago, there was a 'vintage'guitar show in Houston at which there were several battered and beat up original Weissenborns. They were for show only and had DO NOT TOUCH signs all over them. I could not get permission to play even one to check the sound. These particular guitars were no more than high priced junk.
Buyer beware!
Thanx,
Jim |

Thanks for your advices !Brad, certanly you know about those instruments, maybe I have to wait for other one,but my luthier said he can fix it if it is a little damage....I want a good weissenborn (or weissenborn style) for play and record with it,I'm looking for a good sound,im not a collector....also I got weissenborn 1 plans and a good luthier, but it was difficult for me to find a koa set ( I Loose a package from M LUTH in St Louis for a mistake).koa set and a good maker are expensive too,so...maybe is almost the same price ... |

How much do you want to spend? I have a list of Weissenborn makers on my web site, but they're mixed in with resonator guitar builders. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

You realize that first statement nullifies the second, right?
I would agree that there are a lot of very nice modern Weiss repros - most of which feature much better construction than the originals. Whether they sound better is the question.
Also notice some of the better modern repros can actually cost more than plainer vintage pieces, especially if the modern one has to be custom made. |

Darrel understand me....I bought a sho bud years ago in ebay,it cames broken here and there,my luthier fix it and the sound is just increideble....and I payed 1800 $ ( a proffessional double ten)...I so in Missouri at the scotty's convention a lot of new brands about 3500 to 4000 and, sorry but i'll never change my sho bud for one of those nice new machines...it is because I like the old sound ,just personal choice.I heard the old weissenborn sound in ben harpers records, and emmylou harris and i have this sound in mind...but maybe not all of those vintage guitars sound good...
Brad,I'm not shure about buy another brand yet, I so your list...maybe in the future.. |

That's exactly the problem, 'vintage' doesn't automatically mean 'good'. It's impossible to say how time has treated these old instruments without being able to sit down and play it yourself.
On the other hand - most serious luthiers today knows very well that it only takes a couple of bad instruments to destroy their reputation, and will work hard to please the customer.
So personally, if I were to spend $2-3.000 on an instrument, I'd much rather order from a luthier with a good reputation over buying a vintage instrument I haven't had a chance to inspect and play. Much safer.

IF you could've played it...
And IF it had sounded great...
Would you have bought it for that price? |

That is on the cheap side, in spite of the damage... Weissenborns that have been completely busted up and in two pieces have still gone for US $1000
They aren't making any more originals - the price will only go up, unlike most remakes (for a while, at least). |
