1963 or 64... Sunburst started in 63, however your stamped pedals indicate a probable transition model as most burst 400's had cast pedals, but some early ones used the "leftover" stamped pedals.... bob

Is the same true of 1000's? Mine is sunburst with stamped pedals, roller nut and bridge.

At serial #01712, they still had sunburst with stamped pedals. I have it.

Mine's #01536, originally ivory colored. The pots are from the first and last weeks of 1961, long scale, chrome pedals...

Another 'burst 400 with stamped pedals. Either we all found a secret stash of them or, judging by the numbers showing up here, there were a lot more made than just 63-64.

Serial numbers are irrelevant. According to Fender there is no specific sequence to them at all. Having had a half-dozen of various types of 400's and 1000's I can vouch for the serial number situation - it seems like they just stamped numbers in on a group of frames in sequence, but used them up in no particular order over a period of several years. Pot codes also don't mean much, as they bought pots in bulk and the 1 meg pots were only used in steels - and a single purchase must have lasted them for many years.

The cam changer and short scale (with Jag-style pickup) was phased in during late '63/early '64, with the earliest ones having chrome pedals. Officially, sunburt short-scale models were 1964's; long-scale sunbursts appear to be made no earlier....or later...than '63 (I have one identical to b0b's and there have been quite a few of those around). As noted, ones with chrome pedals are fairly unusual "transitional" models made when Fender was using up parts..that'd likely place it as a late '63.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant that I too have a sunburst 400 with stamped pedals, and that there are an awfully large number of sunbursts with stamped pedals showing up in this topic.

By 65 they all had cast pedals... From the info I have on the Fender steels it is a 63 or early-mid 64,,, As Jim S said, serial #'s on Fender pedal steels are not much help... bob

That would have to be a conversion someone did...or it's the only example seen with long-scale guts (bar or roller bridge, "hog rings", rectangular "Jazzmaster" type pickup, 24 1/2" scale) and SS pedals!

Love to see a picture of it!
