I've been lurking for a few weeks as I've pondered an 8 string lap steel purchase. I finally broke down and bought a Sierra from the forum's own Alan Kirk. As an aside, huge kudos to Alan for his super fast shipping and great communication during the deal. It should be here Monday.

Although I'm primarily a guitarist, I'm playing as a multi-instrumentalist in an original roots rock band here in Iowa. I cover guitar, mandolin, dobro, and lap steel duties. Dobro and lap steel have been recent additions. I play a Lebeda reso and a Gibson Royaltone 6 sting lap steel. I'm looking to expand my palette with the Sierra. Lap steel is my worst instrument; I have tons of room for improvement.

Expect the usual dumb newb questions from me. I imagine I'll be spending a lot of time with the Search function.

So, anyway, Hi!

Jim, welcome aboard. This Forum is the greatest thing and I give it all the credit for my present playin level. Before I found the forum I was stumblin around tryin to figure stuff out on my own at a snails pace. I've received so much help and advice from this Forum. Have fun with it and be sure to check out the "old Forum" when you do your searches as there's a ton of good stuff there.

I hear you loud and clear, Steve. Last Saturday was my first ever non-guitar gig. I played Dobro, lap, and mando with a couple of rootsy singer songwriters. I stayed on Dobro most of the night and had a blast.

Welcome, Jim. Sounds familiar: I play guitar, mandolin, banjo, Dobro and Hawaiian, along with some fiddle, in a band of multi-instrumentalists. We keep waiting for the moment when everyone picks up the wrong instruments for the song.

Welcome Jim
The Sierra is a NICE guitar. Great tone and sustain. When I was a young guy I played mandolin, rythm guitar, steel guitar, and even a tenor banjo.
It was lots of fun in those days. I was with three different bands at the same time.
You will likely learn a lot here (as well as everyone's opinnion Very Happy )

Regards BILL

It's a Lebeda Standard. Jiri Lebeda is a builder in the Czech Republic. He's known more for his mandolins.

When I was shopping I played everything I could get my hands on under $1K. That instrument was a little more ($1100, IIRC), but it was head and shoulders above everything else I played.

That's my plan, on both accounts. Thanks for the welcome.

Now somebody stop me from checking--for the third time this morning--the UPS tracking for the Sierra. It's still in Kansas and will be here Monday as planned, but I feel the need to keep checking it. Somehow I keep hoping the delivery date will change to tomorrow. I'm worse than a kid waiting for Christmas morning.
