So, I picked up the Epi Electar yesterday, and strung it up with a new set of strings this morning. YOWZA! That's one hot little pickup in that puppy! It really has the old-fashioned tone. I was surprised at how bright it is, too. I have to roll my tone knob all the way back on my class-A VC-508 Crate, and roll down the tone on the MicroCube, too. It sounds absolutely delicious through my Deluxe Reverb.
I initially started it out in C6, but it seems to like A6 better (C# on the bottom), so I think I may leave it at that for a while.
I really didn't have an extra $350 lying around, but after playing with it all morning, I feel it was defintely worth the price. Thank you all for your help and comments!

I think you made a smart decision, buying the Epi. They don't grow on trees anymore and are only going up in price. Hang onto it!
I played your clips at your website (playing one right now, "Hawaiian Hospitality", and just want to tell you I love the material you're doing, from r&b to swing, jazz, Hawaiian, and you have a good sound. Keep up the good work. |

I was at Steel Guitar Nashville today shredding some cash on a new SuperSlide and as I was tuning up I noticed that there was an Epiphone Electar hanging on the wall that looked like it was brand new! A nice black one!

Thanks to everyone for your help. I want to especially thank Baz for his pics and thoughts on the Epi. It really is a great little steel, and I love its vintage-y sound.
Chris -- I really like the little VC-508. I found mine used for $100, and put a better EL84 tube in it. It sounds great. It's pure Class A tone. They also put an 8" Celestion speaker in it. There's a hardwood cabinet version, too, which I would think would have a bit better tone than the particle board cab of the black one. I would like to find an old Epi amp though, and will keep looking for one to match the guitar!
Jim -- thank you for your nice comments. Glad you like our stuff! When we recorded those, we were literally just getting into all of this material and had even less of a clue as to how to play it than we do now. Thanks again.
Now I gotta go play that little steel!
