TTT again! This would be a great student violin, and sounds great too. Not the thin sound you usually get from an entry level, but nice full sound. |

Tim,
While I can't date your fiddle from the photos, I can tell you that no one has used wood like that for student/less-than-full-size instruments for at least 40 years. The top is some of the nicest spruce you'll ever see; close, straight and consistently spaced grain. And a figured, one piece maple back. Not only that, I can tell from the photos that the finish is oil varnish, not the quick-drying spirit varnish (which checks over time) that is used for all but the better hand made violins today. Inlaid purfling, and the fingerboard and tailpiece look like real ebony.
The bow looks interesting, too. The vamp (curvature) is just about perfect. Is it made of wood? If it's the one that came with this fiddle originally, I'll bet it's pernambuco. Stuff is only worth what it will bring, but if it is pernambuco (or even brazilwood) and it's straight, the bow ought to be worth about what you're asking for the outfit. At any rate, someone would have to look long and hard to find a 3/4 size outfit as nice as this one. MF doesn't sell anything to compare with this in quality.
Wish I needed it. Years ago I bought one of every size from 1/16th up just in case one of my kids wanted to learn. None did, and I still have the whole set. You ought to advertise this on the Fiddle Hangout at http://www.fiddlehangout.com/forum/. Yep, I'll bet it does have a nice, full sound; it's a professional quality instrument in every way except for the fact it isn't full sized. And it's not surprising it shows some wear... sorry fiddles lay in the case; good ones get played.

Johnny, thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I think the bow is real wood, although I don't think it's the original. It says J. Lasalle on the side of it. |
