Well, I got me a Hilton volume pedal to go with my SuperSlide and Nashville 112 amp ! Now the question is: how to use it ???
Someone on the forum mentioned that Jerry Byrd had a way of adjusting his to get a seamless "violin" sort of sound . . . does anyone here know how to make those adjustments ? |

Jerry Byrd's volume pedal "came on in reverse" ... meaning when he pushed it down (toward the floor) the volume decreased.
When Keith Hilton built mine ... he built it that way (I had always used my VPs that way) .... he said he had a heck of a time testing it ...
On a Goodrich, etc ... a cord controls the "come on" direction ... so simply reversing how the cord wraps around the post ... would do it.
Switching pot "lugs" would also work ... but you would have to adjust the cord travel abit anyway ... or you would get some wasted travel ... so its really easier just to reverse the direction of the cord ...
On a Hilton ... he would have to build it that way to begin with.
But the vast majority of players that use a VP have it set up as yours is now ... and there will be plenty of folks that will come along and assist you in developing a good technique.
Ray Montee is the gentleman I recommend for advice ... seeing him at Joliet '05 ... well, thats how a VP is used ... in my opinion !!!

Volume control is a way to keep a note or chord sustaining (singing) for a long time. With the volume steady at a medium level, play a note or chord. Before it starts to die out, slowly raise the volume, keeping the level constant as the note is trying to fade out. This will increase singing sustain.
Volume swells can create a pick attack that makes your steel sound more like a violin or cello (or human voice). With the volume low, pick a note or chord and raise the volume right after picking. It will have a bowing effect.
I'm sure it's a different sensation to have a volume pedal operating in reverse ala JB, but it shouldn't make any difference once you are familiar with which way is up and which way is down.
I'm also planning on buying a Hilton very soon and would appreciate any additional advice. |
