I am new to steel guitar and clearly new to Tuning! Haven't got it in my head yet. However, I play a six string and tuned now to C6! Im sure there is a way, but may be not. At least I don't get it yet. How can I play your tabs, or can I if playing a 6 string tuned to C6? I am thinking that there is a way to convert your E9, 8 string, to my 6 string C6 tuning?
These many different tunnings and different string steels has got me confused. Or I just cannot play them when written in a different tuning or more strings. I have no clue!
Thanks hopefully you can answer in a way that I will be able to understand unless it is a simple NO YOU CANNOT PLAY a 6 string tuned in C6 to tabs written in other keys and/or with more strings! lolol
Thanks

Dean I am no genius with steel guitar or any other instrument but...the song can be played reguardless of what tuning is used C6,E9,E13 or whatever...the tab may not apply but the melody and the chords can be done easily. I get a lot of help with songs simoly by finding the chords used in the song and then by learning to play the chords and the melody is right there. Never say NEVER. |

I thought by seeing your tabs that I could play the rythem (chords) just by your chord notations. But then looking at your note notations and seeing it is for a 8 string guitar. One would think that there would be may be an easy conversion system that could be used to make it for a 6 string! As all the years I've been playing theory went into and right out of my head! lolol Ok thanks for being a little clearer where the chords are concerned anyway. lololol
been trying to learn sleepwalk and the tabs that I have are not for the 6 string or C6 and is a slow process for me to convert and try to figure out the notes (strings) but got a few bars done anyway so I keep plugging away..
Guess my problem is I want the tabs in order to jam with the original songs. I am not too much of an improvisor! lololol I like how the originals are done and being there is no one to jam with or good background tapes/sounds I just play with the original songs...

One of the most fascinating features with Doug's E9th Song Book is how he shows you the way to play a lot of songs that were generally done on the C6th tuning but Doug has the chords to all the songs on the Band In A Box tracks so you can find the right chords and go from there. I have learned that the E9th tuning is in itself a universal tuning and there are really no limits at what can be played on it. |

Thank you to all who responded above with positive comments. I appreciate it!
Dean, yes, the 60 Band-in-a-Box songs that I have on line do have the Melodies and the Chords. Anyone may download them for free by clicking on my link at the bottom of this reply. Of course, you need to have the BIAB program in your computer to play the song files. You can download a free BIAB demo from www.pgmusic.com With BIAB you can slow down a track, speed it up, change the key, adjust the volume of any instrument, mute the melody track (piano), etc. I also include Audio CDs of the 60 songs (BIAB melody & chords) with the book. Most of the songs in the book are easier than The Christmas Song (above). That's a tough song IMHO.
As far as the tablature... it is for 10-string E9 pedal steel guitar, 3 pedals, 3 knee levers. Naturally, the notes and chords work for any tuning. To adapt any song (notes and chords) to Any tuning you need to know Where the notes are on your instrument, up and down the fretboard, and you need to know the notes on the page. Knowing the chord postions, majors, minors, etc. on your tuning is also extremely helpful. It's a long term project, that's for sure! Learning to play "by ear" and learning to hear the intervals in your tuning is also very important. That comes with many hours, days, weeks, and years of practice. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Well all I know is the chords minor and maj, don't know the 7ths yet, nor do I know the notes on a guitar but I do read music but no help for a guitar. I do play piano and for the life of me for 40 years could never really play by ear! so you got that right a lift time of work I have to learn the 7th for sure see that in a lot of tabs
Yes I have biab have had it for years don't know why I bought it and the upgrades because I really think the program sucks and sound phony! I use adobe audition and slowdowner generally and also guitarPro 5 for tabbing but got to find a tabbing program that will tab 8, 10 and 12 strings
eagly waiting for your material. I have most of the chords for all the songs that you and the original songs. so may be if I can catch a few notes I'll be able to move one way or the other lololol
Thanks for the help

Doug, great job on The Christmas Song. The best thing that has helped me with Pedal Steel Guitar is your book with 60 songs. The second thing is Band in the Box.....Thanks again....Lloyd |

Doug -
Must admit that I had a pre-conceived notion as to how the marriage of standard musical notation and tablature would appear on paper. Assumed - erroneously - that it might be too cluttered. I was wrong. Your "combination" tab is clear, concise and on the money. I would hope that - given time - this approach would become the standard for PSG "tablature". It is sorely needed.
As an aside - I was brought up in Westfield, MA thus I'm compelled to extend to you a hearty "Hi, Neighbor!"

I agree with Richard. Even with my limited knowledge of musical notation this format really helps me to better understand the timing of an unfamiliar tune. |

Hi Doug
Great tune. I think that your book is one of the best investments I've made in terms of hearing a melody and being able to find it on the steel. Your arrangements are great!
Thanks

Doug I think I should jump in here to as I have had your book for awhile now and all I can say is WOW. I have learned so much from it. I have learned to play without the tab about 4-5 songs. But what this book has done for me is it has shown me different ways to get things and I find myself using many of your grips and positions for other songs. So all that said I will just say a big thank you and keep them coming.
Have a Merry Christmas and great new year.
