Did I read somewhere once where you can pull 2 of the output tubes out on a fender twin to cut the amp back to half the power? Is this safe to the amp and if so does it matter which two tubes you pull out? Thanks Geo

--you pull the outer two or the inner two...IOW, pull 1&4 or 2&3

--technically you should disconnect one of the speakers to make the impedance load correct. But the amp should be able to take the mismatch.

--don't expect much change. You may not even perceive a volume difference. A bit more distortion at volumes that were clean before (earlier breakup) but not much. However if you do disconnect a speaker that will contribute to a reduction in sound.

George - that's exactly what it will do....but only a little. you still have the output transformer of a 100-watt amp, which willnot start to saturate the same way as a 40-50 watt model. In other words, pulling two tubes on a Twin reverb DOES NOT turn it into a Pro Reverb...

Also, be SURE to rebias the amp after pulling the tubes. The bias normally changes quite a bit and needs to be dialed infor optimum tone in a safe range (with most 6L6's 25-38ma is safe, and whatever sounds best in there is whaere you hould set it. It's little more complicated than that, but it's a startng point. IF you don't know how to bias an amp, don't pull the tubes - go to a tech and have it done.

The ONLY way i have ever been able to get a Twin to break up at a low volume is to use a pedal ( stompbox ) in front of it.There are many out there
for sale new or used that will do the job then you can kick it off to get back to the super clean sound..Ron
