I have been using the Jagwire Nickel wound tommy white guages for my push pull.
I feel the sound great at first but get dull and reedy sounding and/or have problems keeping in tune after a while .
Especially lately . Maybe it could be the temp change thing also as it has changed to colder finally her in NY.
Has anybody had this experience ?
Do stainless hold up any better ?
How often do you change your strings?
Is it that I have to change them more often?
Thanks -Dave |

I use SIT Stainless or sometimes nickel. I change the set whenever I break the 2nd .011 included with the set. When I'm practicing regularly that's approximately monthly; practicing about 12-15 hours/week. If I happen to break a larger string first I might change the whole set. If I were gigging I'd change the set every week. _________________ HagFan

I've tried stainless steels and they do seem to hold that "new bright sound" longer but I just prefer the tone of the nickels and keep goin back to them. You just have to try them to see if they're for you. |

Give what?
All strings are made from steel music wire. On stainless steel strings, only the wrappings are stainless steel. And on nickel strings, only the wrappings are made from nickel. Since the cores of both nickel and stainless of strings are made from the same type of wire, they're pretty similar in the way they pull. The wound strings in stainless sets seem to hold their twang better than those in nickel sets. I don't see any difference in the sound or life of the plain strings, though. |

I use George L' SS strings - have for over 20 years. But, when I had my PP Emmons, I used Emmons strings which were Nickel. Both hold up about the same for me, but when I got the Franklin, new, it came with SS strings and I've just kept them as they seem to work better for me (I've tried others but keep going back to the George L's).
How long strings last is an individual thing, how much you play is a prime factor and whether you want fresh strings with the "zing" or prefer older "dead" strings.
Another factor is the "sweaty palm" syndrome - some have that and the oils and acids from your palms can zap strings in a very short time. I put a new set of strings on my guitar and 3 days after I put them on a friend visited from up north and asked to try my Franklin. I didn't know he had the "sweaty palms" and he played my Franklin for about an hour. After he left I went to play it and the strings sounded terrible, like they had been on the guitar for months - I had to change them again. |

I respectfully disagree. For me,The stainless sound fresh much longer. But if you change often? shouldn't make a lot of difference. Also, I like the fact it takes less changer throw to pull the bass strings to pitch.lets me hook a little lower on the bellcrank. Therefore a little softer pedal. I pull 7,8, and of course 10 a whole tone.......bb |

A pickup is a magnet. Steel strings have more magnetic material in them, hence brighter and louder. I use nickel in my 6string electric guitars to make them sound more "woody" and vintage. My understanding of the string life/quality is that it has more to do with the ball end wrapping than anything, since most string wire is made by the same people. _________________ GFI D10, Fender Steel King, Hilton Vpedal,BoBro, National D dobro, Marrs RGS |
