Comping on the PSG is not as common as it might be, given a tuning structure that would support it. Below is a jazz tune (FOUR by Miles Davis) that has reasonably sophisticated chords. We will just show the first 16 bars here to illustrate a tuning structure that lends itself to comping.

Notice that the only changes needed are NC, P1, and P2.
Notice that the chord roots are all on string 8.
Notice that all adjacent intervals are on adjacent strings.

What is not shown is that the chord Rs & 5s are also on the lower strings.

This tuning setup is simplicity itself (minimal hardware).

If you want a copy of the tuning setup, or a BIAB file with the Root string, fret, change written in the lyrics line (8-5-P2 etc.), just email me.

The jazz cats should love this one…don’t need the keyboards for comping anymore.

6        F
7        D    Db
8        Bb
9        G
10       Eb

I use it as a 14 string setup. All the b5, #5, 6, b9, #9 etc. changes for altered chords are in the full setup. What is shown above is the basic structure with the changes needed for FOUR.

Bb13 TUNING SETUP SIMPLIFIED:

I have had several emails asking about the rest of the setup…So here is the basic Bb13 setup.

The lower changes have been left out…they are essentially a repeat of the top ones.
Tab:

     NOTES
STR NC   P1  P2  P3  P4  P5  LL  LV  LR  RL  RR

1   G                    Ab
2   F
3   Eb           D   E
4   C                                    B   Db
5   Ab       A                    G
6   F                        F#       E
7   D    Db
8   Bb           B
9   G
10  Eb
11  C
12  Ab
13  F
14  Bb

Change it to an EM13 and it integrates with an E9/B6 universal using the functions of P1 P2 above and forget the other changes. The other changes are the bs and #s for the various intervals.

Try using any string as the root of a chord and see where the other strings fit.

Wow, thanks again, Ed! I just stumbled onto this, and between it and the other files you sent, I should soon be happily figuring out what I'm doing and expanding on it with your tools. Cool beans brother, and it will all fit nicely on my new U-12 with very few mods, too! Man, I don't know how you have the patience to put this stuff together; but I, for one, certainly do bop be do - appreciate it. Very Happy

Best regards,

Zeke; After listening to your(fine) music on Myspace, I can see why the chord thing might interest you...enjoy. It is good to know that this "stuff" is of interest to someone.

Several hundred of the "files" that you mention were requested. The work is computer generated, so the "work" was in writing the stringed instrument program that does the solutions.

Note that in the above tune/example that string 8 was used as the root notes. I like the range sound for comping. For melody a string 6 root is in a good range, and has the octave note on top.

If you have any charts for your Myspace tunes (as you play them)I would like to mess with them if you would not mind.

What is the universal you got, and what setup to you envision?

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the compliments! I haven't charted anything out in years, most of those videos, except for the obvious standards, are just improvs done on the fly with the MacBook Pro aimed at me. I wanted to give my oldest son and grandkids something to watch/hear since they moved up to Seattle a few years ago. The "real" stuff is on CDBaby.com

So, feel free to mess with whatever you want, I'll not play those improvs ever again. As Coltrane said, "When the song is over, the music is gone, it's in the air, and you can never capture it again." Of course, that was long before the technology we have today. Smile

Bob Simmons made my U-12, it's basically the same as the chart here: http://www.steelguitarinfo.com/tunings/tununive.htm

I have a wrist lever that lowers the middle G# to G and want to add the 10th string G# to it as well, but haven't heard back if it's doable (just asked Bob this AM). It's a lot to tackle for an old dog, but I sure love the sounds I'm getting.

Thanks again for everything, man!!!

Best regards,
