Because once I heard that sound, I had no other choice but to try and make that sound myself.

JERRY BYRD is WHY I DID IT!

After I heard those first few bars of 'Moonland' and felt the dynamics of it all, I had to discover WHAT it was and WHO was doing it.

I've never let up on the intensity of that dream....of some day sounding as close as possible to the music that JERRY presented us with.

At 52 it's not the girls unfortunately.

I haven't become famous so it can't be that.

At $3.00/gal. it takes one nights pay ($115.00) if I play four nights to fill the car up so I can make it back and forth to the gig that week so it can't be the money.

I guess that leaves the or??

Dave hit on the main reason for me. I play for free but I charge for hauling a 100lb instrument, another couple hundred lbs of seats and amps and staying up until 2, 3, 4, or 5 in the morning. No other instrument sounds like a pedal steel.

For me it's several things.
First its the love of the instrument which includes the sound, the uniqueness of the Steel.
Second its understanding the instrument, what makes it work.
It fascinates me every time I look underneath mine and realize that all these mechanical parts can make such a beautiful sound.
I know of no other Instrument that does this.Do You?
Last: When the weight of world is closing in, I can set down all by myself and get Lost In The Feelingso to speak. Its just me and my new found friend, and for a while nothing else matter's.
I've been playing and singing for years and I've never knew this feeling before, Its mesmerising.

Well I've stated it before.

1. Money.

2. Time, hour for hour, off time in Purgatory according to the AMORC. (It can't hurt if there is one..)

3. Spite.

Well, I did find my wife because I was playing in a small Church with an evangelist and she was in the congregation. I spotted her right away. I was playing a pedal guitar I had built and didn't have a case for it. We were introduced and she carried my guitar legs to the car for me and that is how the rest of my life started. I guess I played for the "girl" early on but now it is just for the love of the instrument.

...it's the wild parties, the adoring masses, the exorbitant, extravagant pay, the wild sexual image, the stretched limos, the champagne, the reserved penthouses and presidential suites at all the best hotels, the prestige, the fame, the riches. How could I live without all that ?

The sound, the challenge, the frustration, the sense of accomplishment, the creative range and for the pure joy of the instrument. I feel bad for my musician friends who don't get the chance to experience this instrument.

Mostly out of spite, about 25 years ago,I played guitar in a band with a steel player that was a complete ass[I always loved the sound of the steel]I asked him to show me a few things,he more or less insinuated it was TOO complicated for me,I'm NOT a great player, but I'm MUCH,MUCH,MUCH,better than that jerk, don't you know.
